The Mandalorian is one of the best shows that are out currently. Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan or haven’t even seen the films, you can tune in to this adventure and fall in love with it. Perhaps this is the best thing Star Wars has ever made. All three seasons of the Jon Favreau creation have been absolutely fabulous. Since, the deterioration of the Star Wars movies, the Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and Andor have kept the franchise afloat. If not for them, Star Wars would’ve become one of the has beens. This just proves, no matter how big the IP, if you don’t produce creative material the audience won’t accept you. Recently, Lucasfilm also made the announcement that they’re producing a Mandalorian movie, however, with season 4 already in production what is it need of a movie? Let’s find out.
The Mandalorian Season 4 and New Mando and Grogu Movie Difference Explained!
We all know that Lucasfilm has recently announced that there is a new The Mandalorian and Grogu movie in development. However, this doesn’t mean that The Mandalorian season 4 has been canned. This has confused a lot of fans. Are there two Mandalorian projects in development simultaneously? Let’s clear all the confusion. So, Lucasfilm has announced a new Mandalorian movie, however, they’ve not indicated that The Mandalorian season 4 has been cancelled. In fact, it is the opposite.
Meaning, the studio is clearly interested in having a TV and theatrical presence of the Mandalorian universe. Now, this can only be achieved in two possibilities:
Possibility 1: The new Mandalorian movie will act as an epic finale for The Mandalorian storyline. Since, Gideon is dead, we need Din to have a personal beef with someone from the Empire like Thrawn. However, since this has not been set up yet, the upcoming season four can act as a filler season (well written) for this relationship to develop and then the movie can wrap up The Mandalorian storyline in an epic fashion. We could also see other Mando-Verse characters like Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Bo-Katan, and members of Skeleton Crew join hands in this finale. However, that would mean that the movie will not be released anytime before 2026.
Possibility 2: The new Mandalorian movie will act as the filler story that sets up the beef between Din and Thrawn. Probably Din hunting down one of the Imperials from the Shadow Council. The movie can also be sort of a standalone experience so people can watch it even if they stopped watching the show at some point, or even didn’t watch it at all. Then season 4 will wrap the storyline for good. This is another possible scenario because The Mandalorian season 4 had to halt production thanks to the Hollywood strikes. Also, this looks like the only way Lucasfilm can get a movie in theatres right now (by leveraging their Disney+ show), as all of their other attempts have fizzled out. In this case, The Mandalorian movie will arrive first and then season 4.
They’re way behind on their schedule. A movie can keep the characters relevant with season 4 seemingly delayed. Maybe, the fourth season has become a movie and the fifth season, which was also planned, is still in development, but now is the 4th season. All of this makes sense except, when was the last time a story-driven TV show of this scale had a theatrical movie and then went back to television? Normally a movie is “the epic finale” like with Firefly or Twin Peaks. Only time will tell which of these possibilities is the correct one.
The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano, Dave Filoni, Rosario Dawson, Ming-Na Wen, Taika Waititi and David Accord. All three seasons of The Mandalorian are available for streaming on Disney+.
