Butterfly was just released on August 13, 2025, and it has been making a loud conversation. Perhaps, screams even. The Amazon Prime Video series stars Daniel Dae Kim, playing the role of David Jung, a former U.S. intelligence, on the lookout for a young assassin, Rebecca, played by Reina Hardesty. However, for viewers, there’s a shocker. Rebecca is David’s daughter. Yes, a spy looking out for his equally dangerous daughter through the cities of South Korea. This also means that this is not just an action-packed series. It’s car chases mixed with melodrama.
What Is The Hype Behind Butterfly?
Among the hundreds of action/thrillers on Amazon Prime Video, why are people losing it over Butterfly? Here are a few reasons.
I. A Star-Studded Comeback

Daniel’s comeback to the screens as the main protagonist feels personal. And, when that role is of a loving father who is a ride or die spy? It only gets better. The appeal of the series makes him look even better, the Korean and American aspects bridging Daniel’s own identity with show business.
II. An Emotional Spy Thriller

People dig “the secret agent who has a soft side” really well. And, Butterfly serves that purpose completely to its viewers. David Jung, who is apparently at the tail of a young assassin, Rebecca, is actually her father. This emotional conflict in the midst of high stakes is what makes this a balance of family ties and danger.
III. Doting Visuals

Butterfly is set in the heart of South Korea, including cities like Seoul, Busan, Andong, and more. Every scene is pushed alongside the beats of K-pop, a suspenseful orchestra, and pensive tones in certain scenes. All of this together makes up for an engaging storytelling that keeps you stuck to your seat. And, the switch between Korean and English? Yes, chef’s kiss.
IV. Solid Creative Direction

Apart from Daniel’s involvement in the series as an executive producer, the series is co-created by Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist, Gotham) and author Steph Cha. Hence, the visuals throughout the series are as consistent as the storytelling process.
V. Favorable Critical Reception

It has barely been a day or two, but Butterfly has a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That is generous, even for a cliché action series. Our guess is that the emotional depth in the show sells the most to critics, much like the viewers. The acting is good, the visuals are stunning, and the story is both heart-touching while being an adrenaline rush.
Skip Or Stream? If you are someone who is tired of watching gunshots, car chases, and street fights in every action show, Butterfly will be different. The story involves deeper sentiments, bonds, and maybe that will save you the bore of watching the same old thrillers. So, definitely stream!
