Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power Official Trailer Revealed at SDCC'22!

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a prequel to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings books and Jackson’s trilogy. When the idea of the series was pitched there was a bidding war between Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Amazon Prime finally won the bidding war at $250 Million. That’s just the sale price. The budget of the show’s first season is $1 Billion. That makes it the most expensive TV production of all time. You have competition Game of Thrones. Since, Amazon had the rights to the material, the show entered development and they made one choice that changed everything. They decided not to adapt the books exactly as they’re, the story of the show starts 200 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings.

The show had dropped two teasers that merely hinted us at the adventure we were about to witness but as San Diego Comic Con returned this year, Amazon Prime just revealed the official full length trailer of the show. It is everything you’d want and more.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power New Trailer Reveals Balrog’s Return and Sauron’s Rise!

The brand new trailer is a lengthy one, it is 3 minutes long and shows us characters that didn’t even feature in Jackson’s films but were there in Tolkien’s books. This trailer reveals so many characters that the previous teasers didn’t. Most notably Anson Boon’s Sauron and the dreadful Balrog. Those of you familiar with the films, you’d know that in the film Sauron has a towering presence like literally, he is absolutely huge in size. However, in the show’s trailer he is completely different, much more human-like.

We never saw the Sauron’s face in the films but if we go by the books then we know Sauron began his life as Maia. He was an angelic being who was corrupted by Morgoth. The trailer in a very sly manner doesn’t reveal too much as to what Sauron is doing in the Second Age of Middle-Earth. However, it is clear his presence alone hints at his eventual rise as a major force of antagonism for Galadriel and the other heroes. Balrog was missing in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers but his inclusion in this series will satisfy a lot of fans.

Despite the return of a number of characters, settings, and themes, however, the latest trailer also shows off just how different The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be from anything that came before it.

Co-showrunner J.D. Payne talked about the show in Hall H during the show’s panel at SDCC’22, “It’s a human story. Imagine the things that matter most to you and all of that is taken away from you. That’s the core. It’s the rise of Sauron. It’s a 50-hour story. Amazon is going to let us do the show we want to make.”

Payne’s fellow showrunner- Patrick Mckay further added, “We want to reintroduce Middle-earth and the return of evil. We didn’t want to do a side thing. We wanted to find a Tolkien mega-epic. Amazon was crazy enough to say, ‘Let’s do it.'” He added that the current five-season plan doesn’t involve the Third Age, “but you never know.”

The show has an insane cast including, Robert Aramayo (Elrond), Benjamin Walker (High King Gil-galad), Sara Zwangobani (Marigold Brandyfoot), Markella Kavenagh (Elanor ‘Nori’ Brandyfoot), Megan Richards (Poppy Proudfellow), Sir Lenny Henry (Sadoc Burrows), Daniel Weyman (The Stranger), Peter Mullan (King Durin III), Owain Arthur (Prince Durin IV), Charlie Vickers (Halbrand), Ismael Cruz Córdova (Arondir), Maxim Baldry (Isildur), Lloyd Owen (Elendil), Trystan Gravelle (Pharazôn), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Queen Regent Míriel), Leon Wadham (Kemen), and Ema Horvath (Eärien).
