Season 3 Episode 5 Sets Up The Crazy S**T Yet To Come

I am amazed at the consistency of this season as all episodes so far are bonkers with last week’s episode being in a league of its own. This episode continues that brilliance and is surely one of the best ones this season. A lot happened in this episode and almost every character was involved in some or the other major moments in the series. It was considerably less on gore and crazy as compared to the previous episodes, but it was as intense and twisted as the rest, surely. Homelander continues to break down further as the series progresses and in this episode his target was Queen Maeve.

Maeve didn’t have a prominent role in the first three episodes but in this episode she had a lot to do. She once again supplied Butcher with V24, broke her alcohol soberness, and in a twisted moment, went on to have sex with Butcher. I was really taken aback by this moment and surely didn’t see this coming. Anyways, Black Noir finally showed up for milli-seconds after being absent from the entirety of the season so far. Noir and Homelander have taken down Queen Maeve and we really fear for her as she is missing now. In the last episode, Homelander already killed Alex, so there is absolutely no reason he wouldn’t do the same to Maeve or her girlfriend.

Also, it seems like A-Train might finally begin to truly redeem himself after the Blue Hawk incident. Deep after receiving some cool character growth in season 2, is back to being a jerk and has once again begun his journey downwards. As for the VFX, cinematography, and sound design in the series, they are as good as they’ve ever been. As mentioned above, the gore and crazy scenes are quite less compared to other episode, but there’s an entire musical dream sequence involving Kimiko and Frenchie. This brings us to The Boys and our new entrant Soldier Boy.

The Boys Team Up With Soldier Boy

Soldier Boy is one of those supes you hate in the comics but here, things took a different turn. After escaping from Russia, and accidentally murdering civilians, Soldier Boy was out to get his old girlfriend The Crimson Countess. As expected, Butcher and The Boys used her as a bait to lure Soldier Boy in but in another twist, Butcher drugged MM and decided to join hands with Soldier Boy. So, did Hughie, much to the disliking of Annie, who decided to steer clear of Soldier Boy. Apparently, upon the lack of finding a weapon, Butcher wants to make Soldier Boy his weapon against Homelander, but would that work? Well, I doubt it.

Soldier Boy is not a good character or a hero in any sense of the word, so sooner or later he will betray Butcher and The Boys. That aside, he massacred MM’s family in the past, so he surely isn’t going to be a hero. But who knows? Boys has surprised us numerous times before. One plot line that I find really annoying and insignificant though, is Frenchie and Little Nina. With everything else that is going on, that seems really unwanted and forced. That said, Kimiko has somehow lost all her powers after the encounter with Soldier Boy, so is it possible his new quirk erases power as well?

I like how Soldier Boy has become such a huge topic of discussion and how tremendous amount of hype surrounds him. Jensen Ackles does make a pretty compelling Soldier Boy, be it his get up, costume, or his voice. His voice surely imitates Chris Evan’s Captain America, only a much sinister version of him. That aside, his performance so far has been incredible as well and it seems like he’s been a part of this series since the beginning. He has blended in pretty well with the vibe of this series and his screen presence matches that of Homelander and Butcher. I am really too damn excited to see more of him in the future episodes and seasons.

Final Verdict – The Boys Season 3 Episode 5 presents a very compelling Soldier Boy and ups the stakes by a lot with the help of a gripping plot, significant character moments, and the ever twisted dark world of supes.
