Just one month before it has a theatrical re-release, James Cameron’s Avatar has been quietly taken down from Disney+. Disney is promoting Avatar’s re-release to raise anticipation for its upcoming sequel, Avatar 2: The Way of Water, which has been in development for more than ten years and will finally hit theatres this December.
Disney Plus Drops Avatar From Its Streaming Library Without Any Warning
So far, Disney+ subscribers have had unlimited access to Cameron’s surreal journey from the comfort of their couches. Unfortunately, if you waited until the very last minute to rewatch Avatar before seeing The Way of Water, you can no longer do so. In 2009, Avatar achieved box office history by being the first film to gross more than $2.8 billion globally, ousting Titanic as the biggest release ever. The classic’s re-release is likely the driving force behind its removal since preventing viewers from streaming the movie may encourage them to visit theatres.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald are also coming back in The Way of Water. The return of Sigourney Weaver is also planned but in a different capacity. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones are among the new cast members for Avatar: The Way of Water. Together with Josh Friedman, Cameron penned the script for Avatar: The Way of Water. Along with co-writing the script for the first movie in the series, Jon Landau also produces the sequel with Cameron.
In addition to creating the scripts for the fourth and fifth films in the Avatar series, Cameron also shot a third untitled Avatar feature immediately following The Way of Water. The success of Avatar: The Way of Water will determine the destiny of the other two Avatar sequels, both components of the larger story that director James Cameron wishes to portray.
The Way of Water will be released in theatres on December 16. The re-release of Avatar is scheduled for September 23. There is currently no information on whether or when the film will return to Disney+.
