I am Groot is a new animated Disney+ show that focuses on Groot’s mini adventures. Marvel is a continued universe where every film or TV show is connected to each other but at its core Marvel is in fact a franchise. However, inside Marvel as well there are solo franchises. Like the Iron Man trilogy and Captain America trilogy. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of them. I am Groot is a part of the GOTG franchise. The spin-off will feature Groot in the center stage. The 5-episode series is directed by Kirsten Lepore. The show will our cutest GOTG member voiced by Vin Diesel, after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 where he sacrifices himself in order to save his friends. However, we see that the tree sentient is starting to grow back from a twig. He becomes a sapling in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and then throughout the film he grows into a teenager, we see this same version of him in Avengers: Infinity War as well.
The “tree” can survive only by saying the words “I am Groot” and the true meaning of these words can be only understood by his friend and partner in crime- Rocket Racoon. The show will feature some of the off-screen adventures that the character enjoyed between the events of Vol. 1 & Vol. 2. Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper are reprising their roles as cash machine and Rocket Racoon respectively. This show isn’t part of the grand scheme of things leading up to the two Avengers films in 2025 but it is definitely a fun addition to the fans who are waiting for more Guardians of the Galaxy content. The early reviews of the show were overwhelmingly positive. I was excited to watch despite by minor aversion to animated content. Let’s see if the I am Groot reviews truthful.
I am Groot: A Kid’s Show?
The show only has 5 episodes and each have minuscule runtime of 4 minutes each. Each episodes focuses on a particular adventure. All episodes are not necessarily connected to each other and you don’t have to watch it chronologically. You can pick either of the five in random order and still enjoy it the same way. I’d come straight to the point, I am Groot is not a show that delves deep into the character of Groot, it is simply a show that shows some events between the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films.
The events shown in the has seemingly no effect on anything that Marvel is planning. This show would’ve been a brainchild of James Gunn who must have found these mini adventures funny. The show is catered towards kids mostly, I mean adults can watch it they find the character of Groot cute. The show isn’t going to offer you anything else but some silly moments in Groot’s early life. I doubt the show will have any connections to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Each adventure planned is unique and is entertaining enough where you don’t feel the need of turning it off. I liked the first and last episode the most because they dealt with various implications of Groot’s existence as a tree. The other three episodes felt okayish were momentarily they worked but nothing really impressive. I liked Rocket’s cameo in the 4th episode he is one of the most interesting characters in the entire Marvel universe so it was good to see him.
Verdict
I am Groot is a perfectly alright cartoon series, the show has no flaw as such as it fulfills the promise of showing Groot in various scenarios. The series doesn’t try to out do the premise and plays it safe, which works for the show more often than not. Kids will love this show and if you find baby Groot cute you too would find this amazing. However, make sure you just see it for what it is supposed to be, a cartoon from Marvel that is a treat for all the Guardians of the Galaxy fans.
I am Groot for what is is supposed to be is a clear 3 out of 5 stars. The rating doesn’t really matter if you belong to the above mentioned category of people. You can without a doubt check out I am Groot with your family this week and enjoy a good laugh or two.
All 5 episodes of I am Groot are currently streaming on Disney+.
