Disney's Biggest Flops 2022

Disney is one of the biggest if not the biggest studio right now. The studio has always been a deal in Hollywood with the cartoons and eventual films that the studio made. Kids were highly influenced by the studio’s family friendly content. Some characters have literally molded our childhood. There was a time that children used to wait for Disney’s new animated films because there was absolutely no competition. With the recent acquisitions of Marvel and Fox, the studio has strengthen its armoury. Disney Studios have been the most earning studios in a year for quite some time now. However, their animated films have become a bit rusty as they’re guaranteed smash hits anymore. That being said, last year Disney also suffered from having the biggest box office flop and it was an animated film.

Disney’s Strange World Is Their Biggest Flop?

According to a recent report from Deadline, Disney’s Strange World is the biggest box office failure of 2022. While Disney’s animated department was lagging behind Dreamworks’ films. Along with Strange World, Lightyear also was another box office failure for Disney which was not expected as it belonged to such prestigious IP. According to the report, Disney lost $152.4 million in total after deducting the revenue of $165 million from its $317.4 million expenses.

For comparison, these were the other losers at the box office in 2022:

  • Amsterdam – $108.4 million
  • Lightyear – $106 million
  • Devotion – $89.2 million
  • Babylon – $87.4 million

It is important to note that the gap between Strange World and Amsterdam which is in second place is nearly $50 million. Amsterdam is also a Disney film. Coming in at third place, is another animated Disney film Lightyear. The gap between Amsterdam and Lightyear is barely $3 million. While Strange World is not as big of a box office failure as Mortal Engines which cost Universal Pictures $174.8 million in losses. However, it is strange that the film had a marketing budget of $90 million as the film had zero to no impact on the general audiences because it had a pitiable opening weekend of $12.1 million. This box office bomb is likely the cause of Disney piling on more sequels in the coming years.
