The Little Mermaid’s live action remake is right around the corner. At D23 Expo last year, Disney released the official teaser but apart from that the audiences in person also got to see glimpses of Part of Your World, the most iconic song from the original animated film. For the longest time we’d only seen one image from the production of the film. The Little Mermaid also stars Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Melissa McCarthy as the evil Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and more. There is a lot of controversy and chatter regarding the film because of the lead actress’ ethnicity and the overall lackluster Disney remakes which genuinely feel like cash grabs. That being said, the upcoming adaptation is at least setting itself apart in one key way.

The Little Mermaid Live-action Remake Is Longer Than The Original!

A recent report from AMC Theatres, the upcoming The Little Mermaid live action remake has broken the record for the longest live-action remake/adaptation from the studio. The underwater adventure is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes or 135 minutes long. This makes it one minute longer than the previous record holder than 2021’s Cruella. The 135 minute runtime also makes the live action remake significantly longer than the original animated film. The 1989 original film was only 83 minutes long.

This means the remake is almost an hour longer (52 minutes to be specific). This might mean that Disney has not made another scene by scene remake but added some freshness. I know Cruella is not a remake of an animated classic but it is still considered an adaptation, making it on this list.

The full list of Disney’s live-action remakes/adaptations and their runtimes can be seen below:

  • The Jungle Book (2016) – 1 hour and 46 minutes
  • Beauty and the Beast (2017) – 2 hours and 9 minutes
  • Dumbo (2019) – 1 hour and 52 minutes
  • Aladdin (2019) – 2 hours and 8 minutes
  • The Lion King (2019) – 1 hour and 58 minutes
  • Mulan (2020) – 1 hour and 55 minutes
  • Cruella (2021) – 2 hours and 14 minutes
  • Pinocchio (2022) – 1 hour and 45 minutes

The Little Mermaid reboot will release in theatres near you on 26th May 2023.
