The last time we heard of Winds of Winter, it got a much awaited and needed update from series author George R.R. Martin. The author revealed that he is about three-quarters into the novel. Even though he provided us with a great update, he denied us of a release date for the book. The reason for the same is that he has previously failed to live up to his own promises and doesn’t want to disappoint restless fans anymore. However, that was it. We didn’t get any update about the book since then. The dark ages are back. With the WGA (Writers’) strike going on, fans were wondering whether Martin also stopped working on Winds of Winter. Well, the author has given us an update on and I’m happy to see that it is on the positive side.
George R.R. Martin Has Not Stopped Working On Winds of Winter!
Martin made it clear that the industrial action in Hollywood hasn’t affected progress on The Winds of Winter, the seventh installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series that inspired Game of Thrones, in a Not a Blog post. “[Y]es, yes, of course, I’ve been working on Winds of Winter,” he wrote. “Almost every day. Writing, rewriting, editing, writing some more. Making steady progress. Not as fast as I would like… certainly not as fast as YOU would like… but progress nonetheless.” Martin also mentioned that Winds of Winter would be the longest installment in the Ice and Fire book series and could run the risk of being split in half by his publishers.
Amidst these positive news, Martin did slip in some bad news. The author mentioned that he has not yet begun work on the presumed final installment, A Dream of Spring. So, we might have wait much longer for the concluding chapter of Game of Thrones. Just to be clear, we don’t only have to wait for Dream of Spring but also for Winds of Winter as despite being 75% done, it is unlikely that the book would be able to hit shelves until late 2024 at the earliest. Scribe revealed that he has finished as much as 1,200 pages of material already, and estimated that he only has about 500 pages left before the book itself is complete.
Martin would need sometime to finish the remaining 25% of the book. Martin also mentioned that Winds of Winter would be the longest installment in the Ice and Fire book series and could run the risk of being split in half by his publishers as both A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons, which both came in at around 1,500 pages. However, assuming that he does finish Winds of Winter rather quickly but after that too, the book still needs to be finished and go through an editing and printing process. Until then, audiences can find some satisfaction by going back to the beginning with House of The Dragon.
All 8 Seasons of Game of Thrones and Ten episodes of House of the Dragon Season One are currently streaming on Max or Jio Cinema depending on the region where you live.
