Harry Potter TV Series Is It Still Happening Release, Cast, All We Know

The Wizarding World is currently in a bit of a pickle after widespread hatred for J.K. Rowling as well as the poor performance of Fantastic Beasts series. The fate of the Fantastic Beasts saga and the remaining 2 films, i.e., Fantastic Beasts 4 and Fantastic Beasts 5, currently hangs in balance as they will probably not get made now. But that doesn’t mean it is the end of our beloved wizarding world’s live action ventures as Harry Potter is one of the most profitable franchise for WB. Even though Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore wasn’t that successful, Hogwarts Legacy has brought back the hype and people are now looking forward to what’s next. For those fans, we have some bitter-sweet news!

Is A Harry Potter HBO Reboot Series In Works?

If you have heard the news about a Harry Potter web series in the past few months, then yes you have heard right! Earlier in 2023, Warner Bros closed a deal for ‘Harry Potter’ HBO Max Live-Action Series! The news was first reported by  Bloomberg, which suggested that the project would be directly based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling book series. The untitled television series is being created by Max where J. K. Rowling set to executive producer. As per reports, it will faithfully follow the Harry Potter books over seven series, adapting one book per series, which will air over the course of a decade and will star a whole new cast.

While most of the fans received this news rather negatively, some of the fans are really looking forward to this series. The 8 part Harry Potter movie series was absolutely brilliant and brought the books to life with almost perfect accuracy. The series performed well almost every way and made Harry Potter as well as the entire cast and crew in the series, a global sensation. When most of us think about any of the characters, the film interpretations are exactly what come to our mind. So, with such a perfect series, one might think there was absolutely no need for this reboot series. However, that is not the case.

In fact, a dedicated multi-episode narrative for each book would actually help adapt the book to last minute detail. As you may know, from Prisoner of Azkaban, the books become quote vast and contain almost double the amount of content in the first book. So while Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was a perfect adaptation, the following films left out almost half the things happening in the books. Although, if you’ve never read the books, you’ll likely not find much missing, but at the same time the series will provide a huge opportunity to bring forward those left out tales.

Speaking about the series, J.K. Rowling stated, Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.” This is exactly how a lot of book fans feel as well because it would provide some much needed depth to many fan-favourite characters as well as dig deeper into the relationships between our leads.

Release Date and Cast for the HBO Series

Without wasting much of your time, the release date for the series in unknown as it has currently not even properly entered the pre-production phase. We expect the series to arrive somewhere between 2025-2026. Moving on to the cast and the crew for the series, Max’ efforts earlier this year were focused on finding a showrunner, who hasn’t been announced as of now. Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and Max Content said, “We have been trying to be very close to the vest. We haven’t gone out to agencies. We have our own internal process where we’ve been thinking about people but we have not wanted to go out into the world. Now that the news is out there…we’ll start going out to the business.”

The cast of the series would obviously be all fresh with new child actors portraying our leads. Although, there have been rumors that some of the elder cast members of the movie series might reprise their roles, nothing such has been made official yet. There have also been rumors of Daniel Radcliffe returning as James Potter and Tom Felton returning as Lucius Malfoy. Aside from these, Toby Woolf is being rumored to be a frontrunner as Harry Potter, Bronte Carmichael as Hermoine Granger, Joshua Pickering as Ron Weasley, Helen Mirren as Minerva McGonagall, and Adam Driver as Severus Snape. But again, take all of this with a grain of salt as so far, HBO hasn’t even found its showrunner and casting director.

That is pretty much all you need to know about the show as of now. You can also check out the fan reactions to this HBO series here.
