House of the Dragon Are All Targaryens Fire Proof Laenya Velaryon Death Explained

Game of Thrones’ end suggested that we won’t ever see a royal saga like this again. But HBO wasn’t done giving us adaptations of George R.R. Martin’s works. There came the idea of a prequel, a prequel that would tell the story of the infamous house that ruled over the Seven Kingdoms before Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark’s rebellion. The house whose people are closer to gods than men. The house that tamed the greatest power the world has seen- dragons. The house our Mother of Dragons – Daenerys Stormborn belonged to: House Targaryen or rather House of the Dragon. The show’s events are set 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen. The prequel focuses on King Viserys I’s rule. The rule that was going to give us the Dance of the Dragons. However, the show isn’t there yet.

The show is based on another book of George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood. The pilot of the prequel became HBO’s biggest debut and has since continued its glorious run with each episodes seeing a rise in viewership numbers. The latest report suggests that the show has an average audience of 29 Million per episode, making it the biggest hit after Game of Thrones. The show’s premise started out to be the king’s choice between his daughter and his brother but as things stand now, they’re quite complicated. Episode 6 was one of the most explosive episodes from the prequel yet. We got a lot of deaths, plotting, treachery, violence, politics… basically we got Game of Thrones. However, Episode 6 clarified a very important question I’d pondered for a long time.

A question about House Targayren, a question that was not answered in Game of Thrones and not even the prequel that focuses on the house entirely. The question is: Was Daenerys the only Targaryen who was fire proof or are all Targaryens fire proof?

House of the Dragon Episode 6: Laena Velaryon’s Death is Controversial!

House of the Dragon Episode 6’s many deaths included Laena Velaryon. Now you might question why is this so important for this theory to work. Well, its not Laena’s death but the means of her death which is actually the trigger. In episode 6, while Laena is in her labors she is subjected to a similar fate as Queen Emma but as established in the episode previously Laena wanted a Dragonrider’s death. She runs to her claimed dragon Vhagar and asks him to free her of this misery. After the initial hesitance, Vhagar does as commanded.

Laena is burnt to a crisp with one breath of Vhagar but she shouldn’t have, right? Isn’t she a dragon as well? Because her mother is Rhaenys Targaryen, the blood of the dragon runs in her veins and as our Queen Daenerys had told us, “fire cannot kill a dragon.” So, how did Laena Velaryon die? Well, the simplest explanation of this question is actually the correct one. Apparently all Targaryens aren’t fire proof, Daenerys was the only exception. Her being fire proof is a testament of her worth and power.

The confirmation comes directly from the mastermind behind the entire Game of Thrones universe – George R.R. Martin. The author in an interview in 1999 had said, “The birth of Dany’s dragons was unique, magical, wonderous, a miracle. She is called The Unburnt because she walked into the flames and lived. But her brother sure as hell wasn’t immune to that molten gold.” We also have another example from Martin’s books of a Targaryen being burnt, since we now know that Jon Snow is in fact a Targaryen by blood.

During the first novel, Jon grabs a flaming curtain and throws it over a wight that’s trying to kill the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. This severely burns Jon’s hand, an injury which bothers him throughout the entire rest of the book series as well as occasionally on the show. With the confirmation of this theory now, Game of Thrones’ end sucks even more. A young girl who was born special, she had the claim to the Iron Throne by birth and by deeds. She did the impossible and resurrected a dead species.

She was called Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, Mhysa, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, the Breaker of Chains and alas but she’ll also be known as the character who got the most ruined. After all that she did, the writers and creators of the show thought that she didn’t deserve the Iron Throne, a side character did and why? Well, in Tyrion’s words, “There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it.”

Game of Thrones was something very close to my heart and one of the big reasons was Daenerys Targaryen and I officially will never get over the brutality with which the character was ruined by the show’s creators. The last season had one job to do, just put Dany on the throne but in order to achieve a cheap twist they sacrificed the best end this series could’ve had, only if the writers were not so biased towards the Starks and Winterfell. I’ve said this before and I’ll say this again- #justicefordany

If she could return in some shape or form and claim her rightful throne from Bran then there would be no greater feeling in the world. House of the Dragon has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. Along with the main cast, the supporting cast of the show includes- Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, Savannah Steyn, and more.

House of the Dragon’s first six episodes are currently streaming on HBO Max or Disney+. New episodes will debut on every Sunday or Monday on HBO and HBO Max or Disney+ Hotstar depending on the region you live in, at 9 pm or 6.30 am.
