House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO is planning to re-taste the success of Game of Thrones, I mean when you have the biggest show in TV history it is quite a bummer when it ends and that too on a sour note. Even if Game of Thrones has ended, HBO plans on making money by giving fans more stories from the same universe. At the time of writing, there are seven GOT spin-offs/prequels in development. One of them being House of the Dragon. The show will focus on House Targaryen- the same house Daeneryes belonged to. The show will feature the might of the Targaryens and their reign on the Seven Kingdoms until things went south.
The first season of the show is debuting on HBO and HBO Max next month and is said to have 10 episodes. The showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik had previously mentioned that they intend to make at least 5 seasons. If the show plans on doing that then it has to continue to perform well HBO throughout its many seasons. However, rumor has it that HBO has plenty confidence in House of the Dragon as it said that the show is already being renewed for a 2nd Season even before it has debuted. I mean considering you’re a prequel of the biggest show ever will definitely give you an advantage but this looks like an audacious move from HBO. Let’s take a look at what HBO Boss Casey Bloys has to say on this matter.
Casey Bloys comments on House of the Dragon getting a 2nd Season
Game of Thrones when it started around in 2011 opened on a solid 2.2 Million views but later grew on to become an absolute juggernaut over the course of its 8 Seasons. The show’s final episode drew in 19 Million views on the first night. I don’t think HBO wants House of the Dragon to start where Game of Thrones left, that is quite unfair. However the network does want the show to grow bigger and is willing to renew the show for a 2nd Season as quickly as possible.
The rumor says that House of the Dragon already has a 2nd Season and HBO is just waiting for the ratings of the 1st episode to make it official. HBO boss Casey Bloys was asked on this subject earlier this year and he had given a clarification.
“Typically speaking, I like to take an approach where we will talk about what a second season might look like and talk about scripts but we tend to like to see how a show performs. That said, if I were betting, I’d say there’s a pretty good shot that House of the Dragon will get a season two. But we tend to like things to air and give it some time. That said, on most shows, we’ll do preparation and put ourselves in a good position to move forward.”
Bloys further explained, “Right now, there’s one Game of Thrones series, which is House of the Dragon. Nothing else has been greenlit. There’s various other projects in development but nothing else is greenlit and right now we’re focused on House of the Dragon. I don’t believe we’ve passed on any others.”
So even if not said explicitly it looks like the rumor does have some truth in it and HBO wants to renew House of the Dragon for a 2nd Season. After GOT, HBO has churned out many good and great shows but none are able to match the views Game of Thrones drew in. They can only hope House of the Dragon becomes as a big a phenomenon like Game of Thrones or even bigger.
House of the Dragon will debut on HBO and HBO Max on 21st August 2022. Check out the trailer.
