As everyone was starting to get over the atrocious Game of Thrones finale, HBO wasn’t done giving us adaptations of George R.R. Martin’s works. There came the idea of a prequel, a prequel that would tell the story of the infamous house that ruled over the Seven Kingdoms before Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark’s rebellion. The house whose people are closer to gods than men. The house that tamed the greatest power the world has seen- dragons. The house our Mother of Dragons – Daenerys Stormborn belonged to: House Targaryen or rather House of the Dragon. The show’s events are set 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen. The prequel focuses on King Viserys I’s rule. The rule that was going to give us the Dance of the Dragons. However, the show isn’t there yet.
The show is based on another book of George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood. The pilot of the prequel became HBO’s biggest debut and has since continued its glorious run with each episodes seeing a rise in viewership numbers. The latest report suggests that the show has an average audience of 29 Million per episode, making it the biggest hit after Game of Thrones. The show’s premise started out to be the king’s choice between his daughter and his brother but as things stand now, they’re quite complicated. Episode 6 was one of the most explosive episodes from the prequel yet. The episode also introduced us to Vhagar, one of the three dragons that were used by Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters to take over Westeros.
She is one of the largest dragons ever to be born but how big is she exactly? And more importantly how big is he in comparison to our beloved Drogon?
House of the Dragon: Vhagar’s Size is Humungous!
Vhagar was hatched on Dragonstone in the Century of Blood and was the mount of Visenya Targaryen, sister-wife of Aegon the Conqueror. After her death, Vhagar was riderless for 29 years until she became the mount of Baelon Targaryen- Viserys I’s father. After that she was claimed and tamed by Laena Velaryon and soon after that she was the mount of Aemond Targaryen who used her to cause havoc during the Dance of the Dragons- the Great Civil War between Queen Rhaenyra and King Aegon II for the Iron Throne.
Drogon was Daenerys’s biggest dragon belittling his other siblings Viserion and Rhaegal. Considering that the dragons had gone extinct after the events of Dance of the Dragons, it was a miracle in itself for there to be three dragons born. However, Daenerys the Unburnt was able to do it. There is a theory that Drogon and the other two eggs were delivered by Dreamfyre, Halaena Targayren’s dragon. The same dragon that scares Aemond in episode 6 in the Dragonpit.
Drogon is too big for his age but when he is being compared to Vhagar his size is minuscule. Here’s a comparison, Drogon when he was last seen in Game of Thrones Season 8 was a little smaller than Daemon’s dragon Caraxes. Caraxes is itself half the size of Vhagar’s. This means that Vhagar is much bigger than Drogon, despite the latter being a large size for that age. This is evident by Drogon’s head being around the same size as Jon Snow in season 8, compared to Vhagar completely dwarfing the likes of Aemond and Laena in House of the Dragon.
Vhagar is still not as big as Balerion the Black Dread himself but she the closest when it comes to the size of the Black Dread. If we see Drogon again and if he lives upto what Vhagar did (181 years) we might see if Drogon grows bigger than Vhagar or maybe even Balerion himself. But as things stand now, Vhagar is at least half as big as Drogon if not more even if he is huge for his age. While there are other Dragons who match Vhagar in size, they’ve not featured in House of the Dragon yet.
A dragon called Vermithor who will be ridden by a blacksmith’s bastard named Hugh the Hammer. While other dragons from Fire & Blood, like Sheepstealer and Cannibal, could come close to Vhagar in terms of size, it is unclear whether they will feature in House of the Dragon.
The GOT prequel has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. Along with the main cast, the supporting cast of the show includes- Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, Savannah Steyn, and more.
