House of the Dragon Season 2 Trailers!

House of the Dragon Season 2 might be the biggest TV phenomenon of the year. If The Boys season 4 doesn’t blow up then I don’t see any other TV show attracting more audience than the Game of Thrones prequel. Given the fact that Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings spin-off isn’t debuting this year, what can be bigger than the Fire & Blood adaptation? Considering the immense hype for the show, HBO has also recognized the goldmine they’re sitting on which is why the network is going all guns blazing for the marketing of House of the Dragon Season 2. Two months before the sequel season debuts, HBO has release two trailers. Yes, two trailers, not one. This is extremely unconventional. Why is that? Let’s find out.

House of the Dragon Season 2: Green and Black Trailers Explained!

Yesterday, HBO had revealed multiple posters that said we will get the new trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2 today, along with the tagline “All must choose”. Once again like all the marketing material released so far, these posters were top notch. Everything seemed routine as mostly posters are released before the trailer is unveiled.

However, today when the trailer finally released on YouTube, we understood the unique marketing tactic undertaken by HBO.Two trailers were simultaneously released – the first trailer is “Black Trailer” for the ones supporting Queen Rhaenyra’s claim on the Iron Throne and the second trailer is “Green Trailer” for the ones supporting Aegon II’s claim on the throne.

The “All must choose” tagline had never been so literal. It seems along with the characters in the show, even the audience has to choose… which trailer to watch? The “Blacks” or Greens’ trailer?

Both the trailers show the respective perspectives of both the clans fighting for the throne, however, both the trailers conclude on the same note – the only solution to establish peace in the realm is war. The Black trailer of HOTD shows Rhaenyra’s mindset after the harrowing finale of season one. She wants to respect her father’s wish and take the throne.

While on the other hand, Alicent’s misinterpretation of Viserys’ last words is highlighted where she believes Aegon sitting on the throne will fulfill her husband’s wish. Honestly, both the trailers could have easily been one, some of the shots are also repeated but the only trick played here is perspective. That give us insight into the character’s minds. Both the trailers also highlight the difference in thinking of the two clans.

While the “Blacks” are cautious and are thinking about the welfare of the realm, the “Greens” seem consumed by vengeance and the greed for power. Rhaenyra is fearing the consequences of war, the bloodshed that it will bring forth. But the Greens seem to enjoy and embrace it. I believe this is an amazing marketing tactic employed by HBO to hype up the Blacks vs Greens rivalry.

This is the first time in a long time that a TV show has gotten two simultaneous trailers. While this doesn’t affect the show in manner but the two trailers’ concept will certainly attract the attention of the audience and will help build up the hype for the show before it premieres on June 16th, 2024. The impending war will be yearned for before it finally happens in season 2.
