Is Balerion in House of the Dragon? Which Dragons Will Be There? -

The world of Ice and Fire is all set to return after a largely disappointing final season of Game of Thrones and the hype is getting real. The prequel series House of Dragon is all set to debut on HBO Max on 21st August 2022 and the first teaser trailer debuted earlier this month. With barely, three months to go, fans are really excited to revisit this dark fantasy world and explore the origin of their favorite houses. One thing everyone is really excited about is the dragons which will be featured in the series. Since, the series is all about the House of Targaryen, we expect to se a lot of dragon moments in the series and here’s what we know about it.

Balerion, known as Balerion the Black Dread, was the dragon ridden by Aegon the Conqueror during the War of Conquest. Using this terrifying Dragon, Aegon became the King of Westeros and crafted the Iron Throne. Balerion was mentioned a few a times on Game of Thrones and his skeleton was showcased in the crypts of King’s Landing. He was the largest Dragon to have ever existed and it was said his shadow could swallow an entire town when he took flight. Every A Song of Ice and Fire fan knows about this dragon and root to see its live action interpretation.

So, will Balerion be in House of the Dragon? The answer is no. Unless we see a flashback, there is no way we’ll see Balerion the Black Dread in House of the Dragon. The reason is that it is based the civil-war era of the series which takes place roughly 130 years after Aegon’s conquest which started somewhere around 2 BC. Even though Balerion the Dread lived long he died in 94 AC, so he’s basically dead for around 20-30 years in the events of House of Dragon. But hey, there can always be a flashback, so do not lose hope.

What Dragons are in House of Dragon?

While Balerion might not appear in House of the Dragon, nearly 17 dragons have been confirmed to appear in the first season itself. During that time, nearly every major Targaryen and Velaryon house member owned a dragon and we saw two dragon in the trailer itself. It is being speculated that one that appears towards the beginning of the trailer is either Caraxes or Syrax. The dragon that appears at the end of trailer hasn’t been identified yet. Anyways following are the dragons which will surely make an appearance in the show along with their riders and colors.

Seasmoke – Laenor Valeryon/Addam Velaryon (Silver-Grey)
Caraxes – Prince Aemon Targaryen (Blood Red)
Syrax – Rhaenyra Targaryen (Yellow)
Vermax – Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Bronze-Green)
Sunfyre – King Aegon II Targaryen (Golden)
Meleys – Princess Ayssa Targaryen (Red-Pink)
Vhagar – Visenya Targaryen/Baelon Targaryen/Laena Velaron/Aemond Targaryen (Bronze)
