But as it happens the reviews for The Last of Us are overwhelmingly positive with a current score of 9.9 on IMDB and 99% on RT. So with barely a day to go, fans are really excited to revisit this spooky world and relive the iconic story of Joel and Ellie. Well, this article isn’t for the people who like to witness stuff firsthand and so, MASSIVE SPOILER warning is now in effect, as the article consists of much of the plot summary for the first episode.

The Last of Us Episode 1 Spoilers and Summary

  • Duration – 90 Minutes
  • Directed By – Jeremy Webb and Liza Johnson
  • Written byCraig Mazin and Neil Druckmann

Some of you might already be aware of the basic story of The Last of Us but this is how episode 1 turns out to be. This is not exactly a full plot summary of the episode but a collection of spoilers, so read on and enjoy. The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed by a Cordyceps fungus outbreak, turning people into zombie-like creatures known as the infected.  Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. The series doesn’t open like the game instead that prologue arrives 20 minutes into the episode.

The first 35 minutes focus on Sarah Miller (Nico Parker) the day before the world turns. Sarah gets a lot more attention than in the game and the family dynamic between Sarah, Joel and his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) is focused in the opening moments of the episode. Owing to that, when the climax of the opening arc comes to a close, its hits harder and more brutally than it did in the game.

Moving on to the 20 years jump, Joel is now a battle/survival hardened man seemingly devoid of emotions who works with Tess (Anna Torv).  We see Joel burning the bodies of the infected, and although he seems to be cold-hearted, he is actually suffering from a PTSD from the events that transpired 20 years ago. This version of Joel is a little different to the one from the games and has a lot of similarities from Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin from The Mandalorian. Also, just like Grogu, he’ll go on to form a deep bond with Ellie while not caring for much initially and treating her like Cargo.

Talking about Ellie, she is seemingly immune to the fungus and that is why she is of importance in the series. As per reports and leaks, Bella Ramsay has done a phenomenal job and you’ll start rooting for her instantly. About other characters, Tess is made as more of a leader and Joel a lapdog, and the character of Robert (Brendan Fletcher) is dealt with a lot faster than in the game. Now let us talk about The Infected as in one scene you actually see someone turn naturally. The runners are fast and move/twitch really fast. Also, in one scene, viewers see the fungus growing out a runners mouth! The first episode will end as, after much trial and tribulation, the two leads Joel and Ellie finally cross paths.

That is pretty much all we know about the episode in a gist and rest of the details can only be learned after watching the episode day after tomorrow.
