Update – The Winds of Winter is not finished yet. Fans have been waiting for over a decade for an update from George Martin regarding The Winds of Winter. In December 2022, he indicated that he had “another 400, 500 pages” to complete before the novel ends. During a recent appearance on Bangcast (via IGN), the writer admitted that he only has 1100 pages written and several more to go.
The books are not the only source of disappointment for the fans. Recently, HBO exec Casey Bloys confirmed that Jon Snow spinoff has yet to be officially greenlit. “We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit [A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight] in the spring,” HBO CEO and chairman Bloys recently shared, per TVLine. “I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything, but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.”
GRRM Shares Updates on The Winds of Winter
On July 22, 2023, Martin updated on The Winds of Winter in a blog post. Martin wrote, “And, yes, yes, of course, I’ve been working on WINDS OF WINTER. Almost every day. Writing, rewriting, editing, and writing some more. Making steady progress.”
“The main thing I’m actually writing, of course, is the same thing… I wish I could write as fast as [The Last Kingdom author Bernard Cornwell] but I’m 12 years late on this damn novel and I’m struggling with it,” the author told Bangcast (via IGN). “I have like 1,100 pages written but I still have hundreds more pages to go,” he added. “It’s a big mother of a book for whatever reason. Maybe I should’ve started writing smaller books when I began this, but it’s tough. That’s the main thing that dominates most of my working life.”
Earlier this year, he revealed which ones he’s especially proud of. “I scripted four. And yes, ‘Blackwater’ is my own favorite of those, although I thought ‘The Lion and The Rose’ turned out very well, too and I have a soft spot for that one,” he wrote on his website.
House of the Dragon season 2 is expected to release in summer 2024.
