The Winds of Winter – GRRM’s Progress with the Game of Thrones’ 6th Book

In August 1996, George Martin began his fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, later adapted into HBO’s Game of Thrones. Martin is the slowest author in the literary world. The series still has two books left to publish. The writer has made several vague promises of a new release since the release of A Dance with Dragons in 2011. In the meantime, an entire HBO series has been released based on the books. Since The Winds of Winter is not the final book of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, it can go many ways. Until the book is out, everything is a possibility.

Progress of A Song of Ice and Fire Book 6 – The Winds of Winter

Last year, George Martin notified his fans that the more he writes, the more the story seems to diverge from the HBO series. In December 2022, he reassured fans that he was working on The Winds of Winter and Season 2 of House of Dragons. House of Dragons Season 2 is set to release in the late spring or early summer of 2024.

On July 22, 2023, he updated on the ongoing The Winds of Winter in a blog post about the SAG-AFTRA strikes. At the end of the post, Martin wrote: “And, yes, yes, of course, I’ve been working on WINDS OF WINTER. Almost every day. Writing, rewriting, editing, and writing some more. Making steady progress. Not as fast as I would like…certainly not as fast as YOU would like…but progress nonetheless.”

There is no official release date for The Winds of Winter yet. Back in December 2022, Martin said there were about 500 pages left to finish. And, since he said, the writer’s strike won’t affect the book. So, the fans can expect the book to release in fall 2024.
