1899

1899 is a new on Netflix that released late November 2022. Why is it special? The series is a mix of multiple intriguing genres including Supernatural Horror, Sci-Fi, Mystery and Thriller. The series is created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the brains behind Netflix’s mind bending Sci-Fi masterpiece Dark. Baran bo Odar in fact directed all 32 episodes of Dark. A German show becoming a global phenomenon is quite a rare feat. The twisty nature of the show and the glaring ambiguity added another layer of discussion to the show’s already outstanding storytelling. Dark debuted on Netflix in 2017 as an underrated show that no one cared about. It ended its run in 2020 with its third and final season, by the end it was regarded as a TV masterpiece.

Seeing my passion for Dark, you can now understand why 1899 is so special for me. The minds working behind the camera for this series are certainly one of my favorites. However, 1899 wasn’t able to be as successful as the creators’ previous work. The show received mixed reactions from audiences where some loved the show while found it weird and confusing. It was not well received like Dark. The series has 7.5 score on IMDb while a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It looks like the mixed reactions has also translated into the amount of viewers that the series garnered. The number appears to be small as the show will not be returning for a second season.

1899 Season 2 Cancellation announced by Baran bo Odar

Yesterday, Baran do Obar the co-creator of 1899 and also, who directed all eight episodes of the show took the responsibility of sharing the sad news that his latest show has been cancelled by Netflix after season one. Obar announced on his Instagram profile in a post that revealed 1899 will not be returning for a season 2. The post also included a note from Obar and Friese that said they wanted to complete this extraordinary story in a span of three seasons just like Dark but he has to face this setback.

He is aware that this will upset millions of fans worldwide but he hopes to return with a new story. Check out the post below:

The show has a talented cast starring Emily Beecham as Maura Franklin, Andreas Pietschmann as Eyk Larsen who also starred in Dark, Anton Lesser, Mathilde Ollivier as Clémence, Alexandre Willaume, Aneurin Barnard, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Miguel Bernardeau, Richard Hope, Clara Rosager as Tove, Jonas Bloquet as Lucien, Maciej Musial as Olek and Rosalie Craig as Virginia
