Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 5 is a return to excellence after a mediocre episode 4. While Episode 4 had its moments, we can all agree nothing significant takes place in it. Episode 5 on the contrary sets up the final two episodes of Season 6 Part 1. From this point on you’ll encounter major spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6, so read at your own risk.
Howard and Saul Punch It Out
Episode 5 titled “Black and Blue” significantly moved the cartel story as well as the Saul story forward. The highlights of this episode were the confrontation between Jimmy and Howard, and the return of Lalo Salamanca. Jimmy/Saul who had been playing Howard since months got a taste of his own medicine. Once again, the show brought forward something unexpected as we were thrown into a boxing ring along with Saul and Howard.
What seemed like Howard’s way of releasing pent up frustration against Jimmy turned out to be something wicked. Howard recieved a significant character boost as he basically lured Jimmy into a trap. The trap being a PI that he’s hired to tail Jimmy everywhere he goes after the boxing match. Add to that the crushing defeat and a black eye Jimmy suffered at the hands of Howard in the match, it seems like Howard is in the game now. He was showcased as a simple, elegant and pushover kind of guy but in this episode alone he’s proven himself strong as well as witty.
Best part is that Jimmy doesn’t know he’s being tailed by two different parties. First being Howard and second being Mike, which Kim decided not to tell him. Rhea Seehorn once again delivered a wonderful performance as Kim throughout the episode, especially during meeting with Viola. That aside, Jimmy has hired Francesa as his assistant in the new office, bringing him closer to being the Saul Goodman we know from BB.
Gus Is Terrified of Lalo Salamanca
That was about the law and Saul side of the story. Coming to the cartel side of the show, Lalo Salamanca has returned. Played brilliantly and charmingly by Tony Dalton, Lalo was absent from the last two episodes. But he has now returned with all his wits and charm as he tries to tail Zeigler’s wife and obtain information about Gus’ operations. The final few moments kept viewers on the edge of their seats as we were pretty worried for Mrs. Zeigler but she narrowly survived.
It’s clear that Lalo is coming after Gus and everything he’s about. As for Gus, he’s been quite paranoid for 2 episodes now and is having a really hard time staying calm. We’ve never seen the ruthless Gus being that scared of anything. Being one of the best and the smartest TV villains, seeing Gus in paranoia makes us even more fearful of Lalo. This effectively makes Lalo Salamanca the best Breaking Bad universe villain of all time. That aside, we are pretty sure this man is bad news for Kim Wexler fans.
