Better Call Saul’s Plan and Execution is what cinematic perfection looks like.
Better Call Saul – Howard Hamlin Suffers A Tragic Fate
Just like most viewers, I am still shaken and trying to contemplate what exactly happened in the mid-season finale. We all knew it was going to be crazy, but it defied all our expectations. Patrick Fabian’s Howard was the focus of this incredible episode and you really gotta feel for this guy. Not only did he react to Kim and Saul’s plan exactly like they wanted him to, but he paid the ultimate prize. Saul and Kim achieved what they wanted to but ultimately ended up breaking Howard as expected.
Howard was humiliated in front of his peers, was tagged a drug addict by them, and had to settle the case by lose the upper hand as well. That aside, during his final moments he revealed that he’s been going through a lot including a failed marriage. In such conditions viewers believed he might commit suicide but being a strong person, he decided to face the world and get back on his feet. Alas, he suffered a tragic fate as he was shot down by Lalo Salamanca in the most shocking death so far in Better Call Saul. He was one of the characters who we believed might survive the series as he had absolutely nothing to do with the cartel. But the creators shocked us by making him a Cartel victim.
What’s more disturbing is the fact that how he meant nothing to Lalo and was just randomly shot, as if he didn’t matter at all. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, the fact that he died at his rock bottom makes it even worse as he’ll be remembered as a sad drug addict by his peers. But for us viewers, he will always remain one of the best and most brave characters on the show, who would keep on going even if the world turned against him. He always did what he though was right and really, that’s all any of us can do.
Why Did Lalo Salamanca Return To Saul and Kim?
Last we saw all these characters together was in Season 5 in a very intense confrontation just before Lalo went south of the border. During that confrontation Kim stepped up and saved Jimmy/Saul but we knew for sure this isn’t the end. We were right as Lalo Salamanca returned to Saul and Kim, gruesomely and randomly killing Howard in the process. Talking about that, the way Saul and Kim screamed at his death was as if Fabian was really shot on set. This once again proves the acting prowess of Rhea Seehorn and Bob Odenkirk.
Anyways, Lalo’s plan of hitting Gus’ establishment was laid waste when he realized Gus was one step ahead of him and had bugged Hector Salamanca’s phone. This is the moment where saw a cockroach in the sewer and was reminded of Saul. As you might remember, he told Kim how Saul was a cockroach and will survive, when she was too worried about him. So, yes he decided to visit Saul but what exactly does he have in his mind? He surely doubts that Saul is a rat ever since he found his car in the desert but he has moved on since then. So, it is possible that he is either there for information about Mike or maybe he wants the lawyer Saul Goodman to do him another favor. But killing their frenemy just to intimidate them doesn’t exactly spell asking for a favor, and we are even more worried for Kim Wexler now.
