Guillermo Del Toro is one of the most influential directors working in the industry right now. He is a master when it comes to creating mythology or using lore. He knows how to tell a visual story creating frames that last with you for a long time. His films are mostly about fantasy and horror. However, not conventional horror. I mean it is not one those experimental films that promise us scaring us but due to their “intellectual ideology” or “inventive” storytelling which faulters in the most fundamental part of a horror film… to scare us. However, Del Toro uses great characters, myth, visuals, lore and fantastic concepts to scare us. He is not the one to be afraid of using jump scares as well but there is more to his horror. Guillermo Del Toro won his long awaited Oscar in 2017 for his film Shape of Water.
The film was more of a romantic fantasy. However, after his Oscar win Del Toro has been working on an adaptation of the classic Italian story: Pinocchio. He is planning to bring out his interpretation of the classic through this collaboration with Netflix. However, along with this Del Toro is simultaneously working on a horror series called Cabinet of Curiosities and today that series gets his first trailer.
Cabinet of Curiosities Looks Like Del Toro’s Expertise!
The trailer for Del Toro’s newest collaboration with Netflix looks like his exactly something that we would see in a Del Toro film. The only difference being instead of getting one story we’re getting 8 of them. The Cabinet of Curiosities trailer is everything I’d wanted, in fact Del Toro even appears in the trailer and he tries to lure us in. The trailer is grotesque and gory. It doesn’t hold back and gives us a hint about all kinds of Del Toro things that we’re going to see in this one. However, the trailer gives away nothing about the plot of the stories but certainly intrigues us.
“Each of the episodes [of Cabinet of Curiosities ]a whole world,” explains De Toro in a previous trailer. “They present you with different delights. Some are savory, some are sweet. You get a surprise from each of the bites.” The stories are helmed by different directors and sports a unique cast. Some of the filmmakers involved include Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown), Keith Thomas (Firestarter, The Vigil), Jennifer Kent (The Babadook, The Nightingale), David Prior (The Empty Man), Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night). As for the actors involved, viewers can expect to see Rupert Grint, F. Murray Abraham, Kate Micucci, Crispin Glover, Andrew Lincoln, Hannah Galway, Martin Starr, Eric André and Sofia Boutella.
Names of all the episodes in Cabinet of Curiosities are below:
- Dreams In The Witch House
- Graveyard Rats
- Lot 36
- Pickman’s Model
- The Autopsy
- The Murmuring
- The Outside
- The Viewing
While talking about Cabinet of Curiosities, Del Toro explained how each story in the anthology has been picked carefully with the best people who can execute that story be it writers or directors. He said,“We hand-picked and curated a group of stories and storytellers to deliver these tales, whether they come from outer space, supernatural lore, or simply within our minds. Just in time for Halloween, each of these eight tales is a fantastical peek inside the cabinet of delights existing underneath the reality we live in.”
Cabinet of Curiosities debuts on Netflix on Oct. 25 with a two-episode premiere. Two new episodes will then release every day through to Oct. 28.
