Knives Out is a whodunnit thriller directed by famed director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Looper – Rian Johnson. The film centered around the Drysdale family as their Patriach is murdered and Mr. Benoit Blanc is anonymously hired to solve the case. The film takes us through an enormous ride of ups and downs. The film had great set-ups and pay offs as almost everything from the very start of the film is somehow connected to the murder. Nothing in the film is wasted. That’s a sign of a good screenplay. It was very economical and with the comic treatment of the film, it was clear winner. It reminded viewers what old Hollywood films used to be like with great sets, multiple characters and so on but along with that it also brought a fresh take on the murder mystery genre.
The film was critically successful as well as won the audiences. So, you’d think that the studio which made the first film will greenlit a sequel but that was not the case. Lionsgate didn’t. T’was Netflix that bought the rights and greenlit two Knives Out sequels. One of them is coming to the streaming giant this year. That being said, we didn’t have any updates on the sequel but today Netflix released some new images and revealed the release date of the sequel.
Is Knives Out 2 coming out this December?
The sequel just like the original has an amazing cast. With Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc at the center of affairs, the supporting cast of the film includes Edward Norton, Madelyn Cline, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, and Ethan Hawke. Based on the images and information we have it doesn’t look like the sequel will have any connections to the first film and the Drysdale family. It would just be a new Benoit Blanc adventure.
The sequel is entitled “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”. Netflix has revealed that the sequel will start streaming on the platform from 23rd December 2022. So, it would come out in the holidays when people can enjoy it with their families. Along with the release date, Netflix released two new images from the film. We already knew that the sequel would be set in Greece. These two images give us a closer look on what this film will be dealing with. Check out the images here:
The first image shows the esteemed cast all in one frame except for Ethan Hawke. By the looks of it, it feels like a revelation scene where Blanc is revealing something or accusing someone. From the image you can guess that the accused person is most likely Edward Norton as he is standing and looks visibly pissed. The second image is quite simple as it has director Rian Johnson talking to Janelle Monae ahead of a scene. The scenery in the background is just lovely. Every Rian Johnson film is a treat to the eyes.
Rian Johnson talked about the sequel to Netflix where he mentions how an invitation can something more, how you have give the right role to the right actor, “You try and invite people that you like. But the reality is you never know. At the end of the day, just trying to get the best actors in each part, the actors that are most right for each individual part,” Johnson told Netflix “So, you also just throw the dice and hold your breath. Luckily, we got a great group that really meshed.”
Johnson elaborated on Blanc’s development of the character as in the first film, Blanc was overshadowed by Ana De Armas and Chris Evans. “Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie,” Johnson added. “Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island.”
Onion Glass: A Knives Out Mystery will premier on Netflix this year, on 23rd December 2022.
