Murder Mystery 2

Murder Mystery 2 is the newest Netflix movie which stars Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. The film is a sequel to the 2019’s Murder Mystery. For someone who is a fan of whodunnits, I found Murder Mystery quite average and at best a mediocre affair. There was nothing horribly wrong with the film but it definitely knew what to prioritize. Despite being in the title, the murder mystery was quite weak in the film. It felt like another lackluster Netflix Original which has great investment in production but no efforts were made on the screenplay. I think Knives Out is the perfect example of a modern murder mystery which puts no foot wrong. When a sequel was announced, I was flummoxed because I didn’t feel like there was anymore story to tell. The decision was taken due to the success of the first film and the only reason for that was the popularity of the lead actors. Despite having doubts about the sequel, I know myself too well that I was going to watch it as it is a whodunnit. Now that I’ve done that I have some thoughts to share.

Murder Mystery 2 Review: Netflix’s Another Lackluster Original?

Rating – ★★1/2

I’ll keep this one short. The film has been out for more than two weeks so I don’t see the point of doing an in-depth analysis. I found Murder Mystery 2 quite mediocre once again but I think we need to understand that the film is not trying to be a Knives Out. It is very much a fun, reasonably well plotted murder mystery that rests on the shoulders of its two charismatic leads who do a good job to carry the film for its short runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Also, I think this not a spoiler as it was in the trailer… it is not a murder mystery more like a kidnapping film. They also make a joke about it in the end which sort of lands but yeah don’t expect anything else.

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler are good as their characters because they’re basically themselves. I didn’t appreciate the over exaggeration of Indian weddings but there was some truth in it. The film looks visually spectacular and the production design team of the film should really be appreciated for that. The action sequences of the film could’ve been shot and choreographed better. I have to say I did enjoy the van action scene. The humor was well induced in the scene making thoroughly fun. Talking about the twists in the film, I didn’t mind them but they were not mindbending or necessarily great twists which were set-up well.

Verdict

Overall, Murder Mystery 2 is the perfect film to watch with your family or even alone when you just want to relax curl up in your bed and not care too. I watched the film when I was stressed and needed a relaxer, I think the film did a perfect job at that. The makers know what the film is about and they’re not trying to make mind numbing mystery which is fine. As the film is short I sailed through it. I don’t thin I was ever bored which is a good thing. So, unless your expectation are too high or you’re very specific about the cinema you watch Murder Mystery 2 should not disappoint you if you’re in the correct headspace. I’ll rate it an easy 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Murder Mystery and Murder Mystery 2 are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
