A new Netflix show is on the way, now you might say we get a lot of shows on streaming giant. While that is true this one’s pretty special, the show is called 1899. The series is a mix of multiple intriguing genres including Supernatural Horror, Sci-Fi, Mystery and Thriller. The series is created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the brains behind Netflix’s mind bending Sci-Fi masterpiece Dark. Baran bo Odar in fact directed all 32 episodes of Dark. A German show becoming a global phenomenon is quite a rare feat. The twisty nature of the show and the glaring ambiguity added another layer of discussion to the show’s already outstanding storytelling. Dark debuted on Netflix in 2017 as an underrated show that no one cared about. It ended its run in 2020 with its third and final season, by the end it was regarded as a masterpiece on TV.
Many drew comparisons to Breaking Bad which was weird as both shows hardly had anything in common. However, the comparisons were about the platinum quality of content that both shows had on offer. Seeing my passion for Dark, you can now understand why I called the upcoming Netflix series special. The only thing working for 1899 is that it has some of my favorite people working behind the scenes. A lot of information about the show is kept under wraps. We have only gotten a teaser trailer and few images from Entertainment weekly. Other than that we didn’t know anything else not even the release date. Well, that changes today. Netflix at their fan event TUDUM’22 announced a release date for 1899. It is sooner than you expect it to be.
1899 Coming Out This November?
The show’s official synopsis says, “1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.” But considering that it is coming from Baran bo Odar, we know there will be much more to it.
At TUDUM’22 Netflix revealed that the first season of 1899 will be available for streaming from 17th November 2022. That is much sooner than I’d thought. My guess was either December 2022 or directly sometime next year. However, this is fantastic news. The first season of the show is rumored to have 8 episodes with each episode being about 50-60 minutes long. This format is similar to the creators’ previous work- Dark. The filming of the show was pushed back 3 months until it finally began filming on 3rd May 2021 and ended in November 2021. Even though so much has happened regarding the show it feels as if nothing has happened due to the lack of information available to us.
We’ve gotten no leaks, no set photos, nothing. It’s like nothing has happened or Netflix has kept everything under the rug very well. The show will originally be in German, just like Dark but will be dubbed into English and various other local languages. The show has a talented cast starring Emily Beecham as Maura Franklin, Andreas Pietschmann as Eyk Larsen who also starred in Dark, Anton Lesser, Mathilde Ollivier as Clémence, Alexandre Willaume, Aneurin Barnard, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Miguel Bernardeau, Richard Hope, Clara Rosager as Tove, Jonas Bloquet as Lucien, Maciej Musial as Olek and Rosalie Craig as Virginia
1899 will start streaming on Netflix from 17th November 2022.
