Sex Education is a coming of age Netflix show that debuted on the streaming giant in 2019. The show has completed three seasons in late 2021 after being delayed for a long time because of the pandemic. The show focuses on Moordale Secondary School charting the personal adventures and sexual exploits of its students, teachers, and parents. The series is lauded for handling sensitive issues in such a mature, sensitive and entertaining way. Sex Education has garnered one of the most loyal fan bases making its viewership fly off the chart. Considering how Season 3 ended, everyone was super excited for Season 4 as it also might be the last for the show.
Season 3’s finale saw Moordale being shut down given all the controversy that has been happening there. This was huge as without Moordale Sex Education would never be the same show. The school connected every character in the show but now that the school is closed all the characters would be opting for a new school. While many suspected that in Season 4 this decision would be reversed it doesn’t look like as many cast members are not returning for Season 4 like Simone Ashely, Patricia Allison, Tanya Reynolds, and Rakhee Thakrar. This means when Sex Education would return for its potential final season it would be a completely different show.
A recent tweet from Asa Butterfield who plays Otis in Sex Education hints that Sex Education Season 4 has started filming.
Has the filming for Sex Education Season 4 Started?
After Season 3 debuted on Netflix, the show exploded and the ratings were off the chart. So much so that Netflix renewed it for another season just a week after Season 3 released. Season 4 might be the final season of the show maybe that is the reason why the filming for Season 4 has just begun now, even though it was renewed in late 2021. After much delay once again, Season 4 has started filming as confirmed by Asa Butterfield on Twitter.
The tweet sees Asa Butterfield sipping coffee in this trailer on a grim day. He captioned the tweet as “Guess who’s back”. This is clearly an indication that the show has started its supposed last season. Even in many regular characters from the series would be missing this season because of the circumstances created by the last season, we can safely assume that many new characters would be introduced. As Season 4 has begun filming just this month, I think the earliest the show can return is Summer 2023 but I think a late 2023 release date is much more likely.
