Squid Game was one of the biggest things that happened to the world of cinema last year. It took the streaming industry by storm as it became Netflix’s most-streamed network with 111 million viewers. The dark drama series was in the top 10 on Netflix in all 94 countries with an existing rating system. Squid Game provided a new high to the K-Pop culture all over the world and fans have been rooting to see more from it ever since.
Squid Game Season 2 Confirmed
Squid Game season 1 was originally meant to end with Seong Gi‑hun boarding the plane but that didn’t happen. After realizing the potential of the series, makers decided to end the series in a different, more open-ended way. Hence, we saw Gi-Hun walking back prepping for round 2 and that got fans all hyped up. We have a good news for all those fans as Squid Games Season 2 has now officially been confirmed.
“Definitely. The frame of the Squid Game has only just begun,” said Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos at a press conference, officially confirming the return of the popular series. Regarding the release, director Hwang Donghyuk said “You almost feel like you’re leaving nothing behind! It’s on my mind right now. I’m in the planning process right now. But I think it’s too early to tell when and how it will happen.”
So, considering that as of now even the pre-production hasn’t begun, we can’t expect it to release anytime soon. With the current pace of production, the filming might begin towards the end of 2022 and it may release sometime in summer 2023. So, there is a long wait until season 2 but we can speculate all we want till then.
Squid Game Season 2 Characters and Plot
Most of the characters in season 1 met their end by the finale and now matter how much we loved those characters, they are gone now. Only way they might return could be via flashbacks but here are a few characters who will surely return:
-
Seong Gi‑hun – Lee Jung-Jae (Alive)
-
The Front Man – Lee Byung-hun (Alive)
- Hwang Jun-ho – Wi-Ha Joon (Shot near chest, probably alive)
- Oh II Nam – Oh Young-Soo (Dead, return as flashback)
- The VIPs
- Seong Ga-yeong – Cho Ah-in (Gi-Hun’s Daughter)
- Kang Mal-geum as Kang Eun-ji (Gi-hun’s ex-wife)
- Park Hye-jin as Sang-woo’s mother (Possibly)
- Park Si-wan as Kang Cheol, Sae-byeok’s younger brother (Possibly)
While most of these are probable, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that Squid Game season 2 will see the return of Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun and Lee Byung-hun’s Front-Man. Here’s what he said.
Gi-hun for sure. He will be back and I believe the Front Man will back too.
Also, obviously there will be a lot of new faces in season 2 but what about the plot? For now, one thing is pretty evident – Gi-Hun (Player 456) is out to take down the organization. He might join hands with the cop Hwang Jun-Ho who is probably alive and uncover the truth behind all this chaos. It would also be interesting to see the change in dynamics between the two brothers Jun ho and the Front Man, as they might be out to get each other in season 2. All that aside, we’ll surely see a lot of new fun games with deadly consequences and will see the rise of a new protagonist team. Until next time!
