The Hawk: Netflix’s Trailer Tees Up Will Ferrell’s Wild Golf Comeback Comedy

Netflix just dropped the first teaser for “The Hawk,” a new sports comedy starring Will Ferrell, and it already looks like a chaotic trip to the golf course. Bright outfits, big egos, and a legendary golfer who refuses to retire. In other words, classic Ferrell energy. Here is everything to know about the upcoming Netflix comedy before it lands this summer.

A Golf Legend Who Refuses to Quit

At the center of the series is Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a once-famous golf superstar trying to stage the ultimate comeback.

Will Ferrell plays the washed-up champion who dominated the sport during his prime but now struggles with age, rivals, and family drama. Despite everyone telling him to retire, Lonnie believes he still has one more major championship in him.

The story follows his attempt to reclaim glory on the professional tour decades after his peak season in 2004. His body might be slowing down, but his ego clearly is not. The teaser shows Ferrell rocking a flashy visor, a bright pink polo shirt, bleached curls, and the kind of confidence only a fictional sports legend could have.

If you ever wondered what happens when a retired athlete decides they are still the GOAT, this show plans to answer that question with a lot of jokes.

A Comedy Packed With Familiar Faces

“The Hawk” brings together a large ensemble cast of comedy and TV veterans. The lineup includes:

  • Molly Shannon as Lonnie’s estranged wife, Stacy
  • Jimmy Tatro as Lance, Lonnie’s talented golfer son
  • Fortune Feimster as his new caddie, Sam
  • Luke Wilson as rival golfer Golden Fisk
  • Chris Parnell as a powerful PGA Tour board member
  • Katelyn Tarver as Lance’s influencer fiancée Natalie
  • David Hornsby as Stacy’s wealthy boyfriend Radford

Also, a fun fact. Ferrell and Molly Shannon worked together on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s, so the series doubles as a reunion between longtime comedy partners.

Will Ferrell’s First Television Comedy

One reason the project is getting attention is that it marks Will Ferrell’s first major scripted television comedy role. Ferrell built his career through hit movies such as Anchorman, Elf, and Step Brothers, but television has rarely been his main stage since his early days on Saturday Night Live.

With “The Hawk,” he is not only starring but also serving as a creator and executive producer. The show comes from his company, Gloria Sanchez Productions, along with T Street Productions, the studio led by filmmaker Rian Johnson.  That creative team suggests the series may mix absurd comedy with some clever sports satire.

A Ten-episode Sports Comedy

Netflix has ordered ten episodes for the first season. The story blends professional golf culture with family drama, rivalry, and social media chaos. Lonnie must deal with his rising star son, his ex-wife’s new relationship, and competitors who would rather see him disappear from the leaderboard.

Golf may seem like a calm sport, but this show promises plenty of comedic explosions along the way. Netflix confirmed that “The Hawk” will premiere in summer 2026, with reports pointing to a possible mid-July release window. Netflix clearly hopes the show will become one of its major comedy hits of the year.
