The Witcher Sapkowski

Netflix’s The Witcher has been successful over the last few years. The most common complaint about the show is that it doesn’t follow the source material closely. This has proven frustrating to the fans of the original writing, including the former lead of the show Henry Cavill. Apparently, no one at Netflix listened much to the original writer, Andrzej Sapkowski.

Andrzej Sapkowski Talks About Giving Ideas to The Witcher

In an interview with Cerealkillerz at Vienna Comic Con, Sapkowski talked about his visit to The Witcher set and his attempt to offer ideas. “Oh well, the set was tremendous, tremendous, awesome,” Sapkowski joked. “But no, maybe I gave them some ideas, but they never listen to me. They never listen to me. But it’s normal, it’s normal. ‘Who’s this? It’s the writer, it’s nobody.'”

Sadly, showrunners and directors often neglect to consider the writer’s opinion. Sapkowski is not the only one to face this issue. It can be tough to bring your work to life in another medium especially if it’s not done how you visualize it. Earlier this year, Sapkowski was asked about his views on the Netflix series at the Taipei International Book Exhibition. During the panel, the author replied “I’ve seen better. I’ve seen worse.”

2023 saw the release of The Witcher Season 3 marking the last season for Henry Cavill. Being a fan of Sapkowski’s books, he seemed to be the perfect actor to play Geralt of Rivia. Over the last few years, there have been several signs that Cavill didn’t like how The Witcher addressed the source material. We still don’t have an official reason for Cavill’s departure from the show, however, many have speculated that the quality of the series’ adaptation could be a reason. Actor Liam Hemsworth will take his place to play the role of Geralt.
