Ahead of the release of the final season of Sex Education, Ncuti Gatwa opens up about his role. The Barbie star recalls playing Eric Effiong as “healing”. Speaking with Elle (via Variety) Gatwa spoke about how playing Eric’s character shifted his viewpoint on a lot of things. It also helped him deal with the internalized hate he experienced.
“I’ve experienced racism my whole life and while I always believed in myself, always knew [racists] were stupid and uneducated, I guess it did misinform my view of how the world works,” Ncuti said. “It makes you think everyone has that opinion and you’ll continually have to fight through life – then you learn that you don’t: you can find a tribe, you can find your people.” Gatwa also addressed the impact of playing Eric Effiong. “He’s so fierce and unashamed,” he said. “It was healing for me, and great for people to see themselves represented. It taught me the importance of representation; it’s so powerful and necessary.”
