The BBC’s Sherlock has adapted several of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock stories. However, there is an abundance of material they could use for Season 5 or a film. Conan Doyle penned 56 short stories about this beloved character in the history of literature. While Season 4 focused more on the short stories, the previous seasons were about the four Sherlock Holmes novels.
10 Stories Sherlock Season 5 Could Use
Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character, could use these stories if Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss decide to release a film or Season 5.
1. The Adventure of the Golden Prince-Nez- A professor’s secretary gets violently murdered, and the only clue Sherlock has is the golden prince-nez clutched in his hand. This adaptation will have all the classic Sherlock Holmes features, from dropping cigarette ash so the killer leaves footprints to him systemically narrowing down the criminal.
2. The Adventure of the Creeping Man – This story will be the perfect adaptation, as Benedict can appear as an older Sherlock since the series ended in 2017. An older professor returns from Prague with a mysterious box shortly before he’s to get hitched to a young woman, but his unpredictable attitude prompts her to nearly call off the wedding. Since the story also has sci-fi components, it will be a great start for Season 5.
3. The Adventures of the Retired Colorman – Holmes gets hired for the missing case of a retired artist supply dealer’s wife, along with some valuables. Even though it implicates a neighbor, Holmes realizes the husband has a lot to do with the beginning and end of it. The adaptation of this story will fascinate true-crime fans.
4. The Adventure of an Illustrious Client – Holmes and Watson are trying to stop the marriage of a young girl to Baron Adelbert Gruner. To make it successful, Watson will disguise himself as a Chinese pottery expert, and Holmes will work with the baron’s former mistress, Kitty Winter. This story is intriguing, full of action and comedy, and has a great opportunity for the appearance of Miss Kitty.
5. The Adventures of the Sussex Vampire – Since Sherlock did well with the adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, they will justify this story as well. When a man arrives at 221 B Baker Street ranting about his wife sucking the blood of his infant son, the duo immediately takes the case. Holmes and Watson soon realize that the vampire has the face of a teenager.
6. The Speckled Band – This story is one of the best Sherlock Holmes stories, and it follows Dr. Roylott. He is an impoverished aristocrat who once went behind bars for murdering his butler out of rage. And he is possibly trying to murder his stepdaughter by using a “speckled band.” Even if this doesn’t get included in the BBC series, it ought to be adapted into a film.
7. The Red-Headed League – The story begins with a pawnbroker taking a job for only red-headed applicants. Holmes’ investigation will disclose that it has nothing to do with the work or the hair. This physical trait is a distraction from a crime.
8. The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter – In this story, Holmes delved deep into the world of elite sports when a key player of the Trinity College rugby team went missing. Initially, Sherlock will run after the wrong clues until he follows a stranger and finds the young man. This adaptation will focus on the classicism of families and individual choices.
9. The Valley of Fear – This story focuses on Professor Moriarty, and given that he is dead in the series, it might be complicated to adapt it. However, it is fun to watch Holmes butt heads against other law enforcement agencies and, in this case, perhaps the CIA.
10. The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger – Murder, circus lions, and a thrilling mystery create The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger, centered around one woman who never reveals her face due to mutilation. The endeavors of Holmes and Dr. Watson in circus culture will be captivating to watch as they try to find the attacker of the veiled woman’s husband.
