The trailer of Maestro, directed by, and starring Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan just dropped, and it has already fueled an onslaught of criticism. The movie, which is based on the career trajectory and the long standing, now iconic relationship between musician Leonard Berenstein and Felicia Montealegre has opened to strong backlash although people had predicted the movie to have been a sure bet for the Oscar’s race. Berenstein was a famous composer, most well known for his West Side Story. The composer had won 16 Grammy Awards and 7 Emmy awards. Cooper, a nine time Academy Award nominee stated that he has been passionate about this project for a long time.
What is The Maestro Backlash About?
Cooper is being accused of playing into harmful anti-Semitic stereotypes. Cooper wears a prosthetic nose for the film, but multiple critics have pointed out the futility of that. Cooper’s real nose is similar to Berenstein, and the prosthetic almost seems like a mockery ― playing into the harmful “Jewish nose” stereotype. People on social media also have been saying that this modification could be avoided if they had decided to cast a Jewish actor instead.
While Cooper is yet to react, but Berenstein’s children have defended him. Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Bernstein said on Twitter/X, It breaks our hearts to see any misrepresentations or misunderstandings of his efforts… It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose. Bradley chose to use makeup to amplify his resemblance, and we’re perfectly fine with that. We’re also certain that our dad would have been fine with it as well.” We have to wait to see how the creators/Netflix reacts to the backlash and if they make changes. Maestro comes out on 2nd September, 2023.
