The Last of Us is one of the most acclaimed shows released on television as of late. The series, starring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal in the leading roles, has won much critical acclaim and is massively popular among people. Episode 3 is one of the best on the series, and has become a fan favorite very quickly. The episode holds a 98% rating, and has been called one of deepest storylines on the show. One would think that Episode 3, or Long, Long Time would result in some sort of pressure on the director to execute it properly. Director Peter Hoar has revealed the notes he received from showrunner Craig Mazin with regards to the same.
Peter Hoar Revealed Mazin’s Note For The Last of Us Episode 3
Long Long Time (our review here) features the story of Bill and Frank, and their tragic ending. The episode showcases different phases of their lives, spanning decades. There are several gut-wrenching moments, including when the two decide to get married in their living room. The two, ever so in love, decide to die together after Frank is left immobile by a degenerative disease and asks Bill to assist him to death. The episode earned the creators multiple awards with Mazin and Hoar being nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, respectively. The episode stars Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, both of whom garnered a lot of praise for their performances.
You would think that for an episode like this the creators would create an air of pressure, but Hoar told Deadline that nothing of that sort had transpired. Mazin was mostly reassuring, as Hoar said, “He didn’t say, ‘you have a different episode, go make it look different.’ In fact, if anything, he would’ve probably said, ‘go and look at what we’ve done and that’s the show.’ The only thing he was really keen on was the way the camera was used. It was fundamentally a handheld camera show, which was something that I think he was really into for his previous show, ‘Chernobyl.’ I think it’s something that Craig responded to in its realness, its vérité. But that was really the only thing he asked us to do.”
Recently Mazin confirmed the progress towards the production of Season 2 of The Last of Us, and how the creative team intends to switch a few things around. All the episodes of The Last of Us are currently streaming on Max.
