One of the most anticipated projects Marvel’s phase 4 was The Eternals which was directed by multiple Oscars winner Chloe Zhao. The film had assembled a great cast including names Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kit Harrington. The director’s stature too exceeds her. Everything about the film was great, there was no reason for it to fall short on any front but as well know, it is the worst rated MCU film of time. A film which had all the things going for it, just shattered as it was released. The film wasn’t even a financial success as it was critically butchered so ruthlessly. Whatever little it earned on the box office was simply because of the MCU banner and majority of the money came in from the opening weekend. It is tied with Thor: Love and Thunder to have the lowest MCU IMDb score of 6.3/10.
However, considering its Rotten Tomatoes rating and overall reception it is more of a critical failure than Thor: Love and Thunder. The reason for such catastrophic performance was clear to me. It was because of Chloe Zhao’s attempt to tell a deeper story of humanity while wanting to make everything to connect with each other and making it a formulaic MCU movie. More then a year after the film’s release many actors have given their thoughts for the film’s response and now Barry Keoghan too has chimed in as to why the film was received so poorly.
Why Was Marvel Eternals Received So Poorly?
Chloe Zhao has mentioned in the past that despite the film’s poor reception, if there was ever an Eternals 2 then she would return in the director’s chair. Many actors along with her have said the same thing that they would like to reprise their roles in the future. Barry Keoghan who played Druig in the movie and cameoed as Joker in The Batman revealed in an interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he revealed why according to him, the film didn’t have an ideal reception.
Keoghan said, “I think Chloe [Zhao] brought a whole kind of feel to it. You know? So Chloe brings – as you’ve seen from her past films – raw performances and really really touching performances. I don’t think it was… I think it was new. I think it was just new. It was new for the Marvel world.”
The rest of the conversation between Keoghan and Horowitz looked something like:
Barry Keoghan: “I’m always optimistic. I actually spoke with Victoria [Alonso] recently. Victoria Alonso, she was there and I didn’t get a chance to chat with her too much, but yeah. I’m always optimistic, always. I wanna know what Druig is doing right now.”
Josh Horowitz: “So many people to hang out with. Harry Styles, Kumail. Who knows?”
Keoghan: “Yeah, anyways we’ll see. You’re not going to get that out of me. I know nothing,. I know nothing.”
MCU’s newest film – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be available for streaming on Disney+ from 1st February 2023. Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania will release in theatres near you on 17th February 2023.
