One of the leading action franchises in Hollywood is Mission Impossible. For more than two decades Mission Impossible movies have been blowing the minds of the audiences by giving them crazier and crazier action sequences. In fact, after the addition of Christopher McQuarrie the narratives of these action blockbusters improved significantly. These deeper stories connected with the audiences resulting in great reception. After the magnificent performance of Mission Impossible 6, one would imagine that its sequel would be clear box office knockout. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case. Despite there being hype around MI 7, the film will most likely fail at the box office due to a multitude of reasons. Let’s take a look at them.
Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part One Has Too Much Competition!
Don’t start pelting stones at me, listen to all the reasons which brings me to the conclusion of MI 7’s box office failure. Early box office projections for Mission Impossible 7 show it is on track to earn $90 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend. Those are huge numbers but not enough for the film as the budget is astronomical high – $290 million. So, a $90 million opening may not be enough for a film which will face stiff competition in about a week’s time. You must already know about the IMAX battle.
Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is losing all its IMAX screens to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer when it releases a week later alongside Barbie. In Top Gun: Maverick’s glorious run at the box office more than $100 million came from IMAX shows. This is a huge loss already which is why Tom Cruise was so mad about this entire development. Which brings me to my next point, both Oppenheimer and Barbie are tough competitors. Kids and families will go for Barbie and cinephiles to Oppenheimer. Barely a few would go for Mission Impossible.
The hype around both films is insane and Tom Cruise’s action extravaganza will be sandwiched in the middle. Especially if both Oppenheimer and Barbie turn out to be good. All this time we were fighting about who will win the Barbie vs Oppenheimer box office battle but I think we certainly know who is going to lose it. It is predicted that both films will do well and none of them would suffer entirely, though the same cannot be said about MI 7. The early reviews of the film aren’t overwhelmingly positive either, which means it won’t be a surprise hit like Maverick.
The film stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales and Vanessa Kirby. MI 7 is slated to release on 14th July 2023 & Dead Reckoning Part Two is slated to release on 28th June 2024.
