Director Matthew Lopez has teased what it would take to make Red, White & Royal Blue 2 without any book sequels. The movie premiered on Prime Video on August 11. It is an adaptation of the 2019 best-selling novel of the same title by Casey McQuiston. The story follows the blooming relationship between Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). Alex is the son of the President of the United States. Henry is the grandson of the King of the United Kingdom.

About the Red, White and Royal Blue Sequel

According to GQ, Matthew shared his thoughts on how the ending should be a continuation of another film. He said, “The film’s message of hope and love is resonating deeply, and it’s been particularly gratifying to see so many people falling in love once again with Alex and Henry. If a sequel were to happen, the worst thing would be for it to be rushed. It would need to be as thoughtfully and carefully made as the first one. Besides, before we do anything, we have two strikes in Hollywood to get sorted first.”

Despite a few adjustments to the overall plot, the film concludes in the same place as the novel, and McQuiston has not written a sequel. The only part of the duo’s life that has been published is a bonus chapter. The chapter follows Alex ad Henry five years later and highlights their life in New York. If the movie takes this bonus chapter for the sequel, it would follow their engagement and Alex’s run for public office. The movie doesn’t necessarily have to follow the bonus chapter. If they pick up the story from the end and maintain Alex and Henry’s dynamic, it would feel like a sequel. Looking at the praise and admiration the adaptation received, a sequel must see the light of day.
