Maestro: Bernstein Siblings' Reaction to the Bradley Cooper Backlash

Bradley Cooper’s look in his forthcoming movie Maestro has stimulated controversy. Directed by Bradley Cooper, Maestro is a biopic highlighting the relationship between American composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. Cooper plays the role of Leonard Bernstein, and Carey Mulligan plays Felicia Montealegre. The movie’s official Netflix trailer dropped in August. The first stills featuring the actor as the composer came out in May. Maestro will be released in select theaters on November 22 and on Netflix on December 20.

Many viewers appreciated the film’s cinematography by judging the trailer and first stills. However, amidst all the admiration and praise, the film has also received huge disapproval. The criticism primarily revolves around Bradley Cooper’s appearance.

Maestro: Controversy and the Bernstein Siblings’ Reaction

Maestro’s trailer features Bradley Cooper with facial prosthetics to make his nose seem bigger. Since Leonard Bernstein was Jewish, the actor’s fake nose seems to reinforce detrimental stereotypes. Few have pointed out that the prosthetic was needless and the actor could have played the role without it. Others took to social media platforms to criticize the fact that a Jewish actor is not playing Leonard Bernstein in Maestro.

Following the criticism regarding Bradley Cooper’s appearance in Maestro, Leonard and Felicia’s children, Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Bernstein, expressed their views. On their father’s official Twitter account, they posted a sincere note acknowledging how Cooper involved them in every step. The siblings conveyed how they are touched by Cooper’s commitment to playing their father’s role. They added that complaints about the actor’s appearance in Maestro “are disingenuous attempts to bring a successful person down a notch.” They posted that they could feel the actors’ respect for their parents.
