Sam Levinson’s The Idol has been cancelled by HBO, after only one season in spite of having a loaded cast and songs by the Weeknd, Jennie from Blackpink and Lily-Rose Depp. After Levinson and The Weeknd’s expectation of them creating “the show of the summer”, this comes as a surprise — considering how widely discussed and criticised the show was. While the show did spark controversy regarding its themes, screenwriting, and mediocre performances online, the creative duo whose “sick and twisted minds” had been behind the show had been insistent about the self-awareness and the irony of its storyline.
No New Seasons For The Idol
The Idol, starring Lily Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop-starlet navigating her way through stardom and the entertainment industry while different forces work against her. The Weeknd plays Tedros, a club owner who Jocelyn has a shocking relationship dynamic with. The show also stars a hoard of famous names in different roles, such as Troye Sivan, Jennie Ruby Jane, Rachel Sennott, Moses Sumney, and Dan Levy in a bevy of different roles. The show sparked controversy with its graphic depictions of sex and violence, and was also accused of romanticizing abuse and exploiting Depp for voyeuristic purposes solely.
While the creative duo had not clarified anything regarding the development of a second season, there was much speculation surrounding the development of a sequel. An HBO executive told Entertainment Weekly, “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
