The Nun 2 Review - Worst Entry In The Conjuring Franchise Since The Nun

The reason I can write this review is because I live in India and The Nun 2 has been released here a day before on the account of Krishna Janmashtami to get an extended opening weekend. I’m a big horror buff, so I look forward to any horror movie. Since, The Nun movies belong to The Conjuring universe I was already signed up. Everyone including me, didn’t like The Nun. However, the trailer for the sequel looked better. The director at the centre of affairs is Michael Chaves – director of The Conjuring 3. While the third instalment of The Conjuring is its weakest but it is still a decent horror film. So, with high hopes I stepped into The Nun II today, expecting a film that finally gives justice to Valak. So, did it? Let’s find out!

The Nun 2 Review – 2 Hours Of Walking In Creepy Places!

HOC Rating – ★

Just like The Nun, the sequel limits it’s horror to characters walking in creepy hallways and attics. There is no effort put in to generate real horror that stays with us. The film feels like a series of lined up with cheap jump scares that doesn’t amount to anything. It felt like Valak was playing pranks on our characters as if the demon has an aim then why is it spending time teasing it’s presence via creeping out little girls. The Conjuring films also have jump scares but they’re elaborate, innovative and most importantly connected to a narrative.

A Terrible Climax If you thought The Nun had an underwhelming climax then The Nun II takes it to a whole new level. At least, in the first film they had real blood of Jesus Christ to vanquish Valak. Here the demon nun is defeated by wine as Sister Irene prays and makes it the blood of Christ as priests do in Churches. Now, without demeaning any religion, is this an acceptable way to kill the greatest evil of The Conjuring franchise? Wine bursts out of barrels and manages to eviscerate Valak for the second time. Even after getting the ancient relic, Valak doesn’t become more powerful just flies in the air and hisses. After which wine, which is used to digest cheese kills the demon. Fantastic! And then we say writers are underpaid by Hollywood.

The Conjuring Tokenism – The film promised us the backstory of Valak and to be fair it gave us that, as illogical as that might’ve been. However, the sequel also had to connect Valak’s presence throughout The Conjuring timeline. Interestingly, The Nun II shows us bold connections to The Conjuring 2 and the Warrens, however, doesn’t clarify Valak’s relation to them. Sister Irene and Lorrain Warren seem to have a genetic connection but what exactly remains hidden. The sequel is using The Conjuring 2’s popularity to invite audiences only to disappoint them by ruining the James Wan directorial. Hopefully, The Conjuring 4 will clear out all these loose ends and Wan will return in the director’s chair.

Final Verdict

The Nun II is for the most part better than the first one but has similar problems in its screenplay because there is no story at all. There are too many characters in the film and a jumpscare assigned to each one of them. Valak is once again degraded for the audience as a glorified prankster. In the entire runtime of 2 hours the entire theatre was chuckling in intense sequences, that tells you how the film is being received. For me, The Nun 2 is the worst film of 2023 so far and I’ll rate it 1 out of 5 stars.

The Nun II is playing in theatres near you.
