Taika Waititi Will Not Return for Thor 5

Thor: Love and Thunder was, well let’s just say, not up to the mark and this was acknowledged by Hemsworth himself. Ever since Love and Thunder, MCU has seen a sharp downfall, however things now seem to be picking up with acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and Loki Season 2. Yet when it comes to Thor, fans still have a bad taste in their mouths as now it’s universally acknowledged that Taika Waititi went bit too far. The goofy and trippy tone of the film was widely criticized by the fans alongside its failure to respect the serious moments. Therefore, MCU is probably on its paths to make amends and in that effort, they are out looking for a new director for the franchise.

Taika Waititi Won’t Return to Direct Thor 5

For a few this might be bad news as it means Waititi won’t be able to complete his trilogy, but for most this seems like a sigh of relief. As reported by multiple sources, Marvel is moving forward with the production of Thor 5 and is actively seeking a new director. This means Taika Waititi won’t return at least in the capacity of a director. However, as you may know, he also voices the character of Korg so he might return in a voice role. Since, this information has arrived, fans have been debating if this is a right move or not.

So, let us analyse the Thor franchise for a moment. The first film directed by Kenneth Branagh opened to largely positive reviews by the fans and critics alike. That aside, it was probably the only film which portrayed Thor and Norse Mythology as it was supposed to be. Moving on, Thor: The Dark World turned out to be a lack-luster but did a fine job when it comes to Dark Elves and Norse mythology. Although, it sacrificed itself in favour of a wider MCU narrative. Next, Thor: Ragnarok is often regarded as one of the best MCU films ever made being a fresh comedic take on the comics. However, it honored its serious moments and delivered well crafted arcs for all its protagonists.

Coming to Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi clearly lost the sight of what made Ragnarok incredible and completely shifted his focus to stuffing as many silly jokes as he could in every moment. Therefore, it was bashed by fans and critics, even though it made a lot of money for Marvel. So, Thor 5 might see a return to the serious tone of the first two Thor movies and that has got fans talking about a possible return of Kenneth Branagh. Well, Branagh sure nailed the Kingly and Mythology heavy tone of the Thor comics and it really won’t be a bad idea for him to return.

However, we expect MCU to bring in a new director and so far there are no updates about who it will be Moving on to the plot, Love and Thunder’s post credit scene introduced Hercules and set up a conflict between him and Thor. Thor 5 might explore the Greek pantheon as well as Norse pantheon further and dig deeper into both mythologies. Also, we recently saw a Balder the Brave teaser in Loki Season 2 Episode 3, so we can expect him to finally make an appearance as well. Let us know what your expectations from the film are. Would we finally see Marvel dive deep into mythology like the Thor comics?
