Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 4 Review Poor Fight Choreography Lets It Down As Well

Disney Plus new Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi debuted on the streaming platform last month. The sci-fi drama released fourth episode on D+ a few hours ago and the penultimate episode is going to release next Wednesday. All the episodes have been directed by Deborah Chow and the show is basically a Midquel, placed between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope unlike MandalorianBook of Boba Fett, or Ahsoka. Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 4 is out and though it’s the best one so far, poor fight choreography, writing and direction once again let it down.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 4 – Really Bad Action

I got nothing personal against her, but Ingram’s Reva still isn’t a compelling villain and her performance, though better than first two episodes, is still wooden and unimpressive. The rest of the cast didn’t perform well as well excluding Ewan Mcgregor, and Indira Verma. Yet the biggest flaw of this episode was its poorly choreographed action sequences which weren’t any better that the original trilogy. Although this episode was high on action, and some genuinely thrilling moments, the action was performed really bad.

How can a show be so inconsistent in production? On one hand it features awesome VFX and set designs but on the other, it has downright crappy action sequences with horrible choreography and very lazy writing. In one particular moment Indira Verma’s character was captured by the Inquisitors but she broke free almost instantly without sweat. That aside, Obi-Wan and Leia always unrealistically seem to make it out of tough situations in the end with the help of nothing but plot armor.

Moments like these are in abundance in this series and that makes the action seem cringe-worthy. Right from episode 1, Reva’s action is highly wooden and ill-performed and so is Obi-Wan’s. Don’t take me wrong, Ewan McGregor has done a brilliant job so far and probably the only thing good about this show but his stunts were way better performed in the prequel trilogy. Darth Vader again has a cameo in this episode and it really serves no actual purpose but to excite fans, yet James Earl Jones has done a fantastic job.

But Hope Still Remains

Now let us talk about the writing, which I really don’t wanna talk about. I can’t possibly emphasize more on just how overly bland, inconsistent and lazy it is. Aside from the screenplay, the script is also really bad as it features absolutely no memorable dialogues, quotes, or monologues. It’s uninteresting and actors really don’t have much to work with. So, when there’s no good script, viewers rely on the visuals and action. Now as mentioned above in length, action is awful so that leaves us with technicalities and that is were this show excels.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 4 features awesome VFX, production design, and costumes. Its production value is the only thing that feels satisfying and in sync with the promise this series made. Although, it’s not as good as The Mandalorian, it is still good, and the cinematography is on point as well. Its soundtrack also deserves praise as it befits the Jedi and is quite different from what we’ve heard so far in The Mandalorian and TBOBF. Ewan McGregor deserves a lot of praise for literally carrying this series with his committed performance. He also received good support from Indira Verma and Vivien Lyra Blair, who is basically the Grogu of this series.

Final Verdict: Episode 4 is surely an improvement but it still has way too many flaws to look the other way. With just two episodes to go, the redemption of this series seems rather strenuous but in the end, hope is all Star Wars is actually about, no?
