I think at this point everyone is aware that there is a live action Barbie movie on its way. The film is the first to adapt the iconic Mattel toyline into a live action flick. The film is helmed by Greta Gerwig who is an Oscar winning director for Lady Bird. She has co-written the film with Marriage Story’s director Noah Baumbach. Not to mention Gerwig and Baumbach have been in a romantic relationship from 2011. So them writing a Rom-Com like this could be really great. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and stars Margot Robbie in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef. The film has been well into production since Spring.
The filming of the film has been going on in London under tight security, which has to be joke seeing the amount of set photos we’ve gotten that have revealed so many sets and different outfits of Barbie and Ken. Apart from them, the official first looks revealed by Warner Bros. shows us Robbie’s Barbie driving a pink convertible in a pink set and Gosling’s Ken in a denim vest flaunting his physique. We’ve been getting regular updates about the Barbie movie however, lately the updates have been scant and there is a pretty good reason for that. The film has wrapped its production or kind of…Let’s find out.
Is the Production for the Barbie still Going on?
The principal photography for the Barbie movie has been going on for a nice four months now. It looks like the film is still going strong. While previous set photos gave us the importance of pink color in the film, some of the recent ones have shown us Barbie and Ken wearing neon outfits. The scarce updates from the set of the film suggests that things are cold as previously there was one new set photo daily. Recently two actresses who are part of the Barbie film announced their wrap as they’ve completed their scenes in the film.
It still remains a mystery as in does that mean the entire film has wrapped production or is it limited to these actresses. There has been no official word from Warner Bros. thus far suggesting the latter. Here’s another thing to ponder upon, all the set photos that we’ve gotten yet only feature Barbie and Ken. There are no set photos revealed where the rest of the cast is seen. I smell something fishy. Warner Bros. too have only revealed Ken and Barbie’s first look, leaving us with no idea what the other cast members would look like.
The two actresses who are mentioned above are Nef and Greenblatt. While Greenblatt made the announcement of her wrap on Twitter, she chose to do it the sincere way where she acknowledged the endearment and respect she has for her colleagues and that she is thrilled for everyone to watch the film in theatres.

However Nef, definitely took another train. She posted a photo on Instagram where she is seen alongside the rest of the cast Robbie, Ferrera, Shipp, Kayne, and Rooney. The post made it clear the actress has wrapped filming for the film.
The announcements still don’t answer our query but it is clear that if the film’s production hasn’t wrapped up already, it is in the final stretch of the its production. An official production wrap date is near and we can expect Warner Bros. to make that announcement very soon. The filming of the movie has been going on quite a while now and that has provided us with some great unofficial looks at Barbie and Ken. Apart from the star studded cast there is another thing that has gotten me excited for the film.
Robbie and Mackay being in the same film. Both actresses have famously been called each others’ doppelgangers and I think everyone can see why. It’ll be really fun to see both of them on screen together. The Barbie film seems to be banking on nostalgia and as well as make sufficient changes for the contemporary audience to get on board. The film is off to a great start as it was already riled up twitter with its spicy first looks and set photos. Hope the film is as spicy as the snippets we’ve seen until now.
The Barbie movie is slated to be released on July 21st 2023.
