These days, Toei Animation is quite busy with its TV series, and thanks to Dragon Ball, the company is also eyeing theatres. The newest installment of the popular franchise, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, was released a few months ago, and it created a huge impact. A recent financial report from Toei Animation shows that the IP continues to lead in terms of sales.
The information was provided by Toei themselves, which recently published its first-quarter FY2023 report. The data, which was obtained between April and June, tracks the company’s earnings from both domestically and internationally distributed television shows and movies. And as you can see, this report is dominated by Dragon Ball.

One Piece came in second place behind Dragon Ball Super in terms of domestic licensing. This time, the franchises’ earnings were comparable because the latter IP is currently experiencing a major resurgence. The Wano Country saga has developed its anime further, and a movie is soon to be launched. Pretty Cure follows One Piece as the third-highest earner for the company, with Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai coming in at number four.
Fans might be surprised that Dragon Ball came in first for foreign film income. As a result of Toei Animation’s film licenc\se, it was almost two times as popular as One Piece, which came in second. Due to broadcast contracts, the company has already profited from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in other countries, and it will continue to do so once the box office numbers are in. Due to Goku, Toei’s domestic film revenue, which increased from 4.3 billion yen to approximately 8 billion in a year, placed Dragon Ball Super at the top.
And with more than twice the money One Piece generated in the first quarter, Dragon Ball Super took the top spot for general licencing abroad. Slam Dunk finished in fourth place, while Digimon took third.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is now only available in Japan, but it won’t be long before it becomes available globally. The movie will premiere on Crunchyroll on August 19 in the United States, followed by premieres in other regions.
