The theatrical release of Michael B. Jordan’s Creed III has been delayed by a little over three months. Creed III, the third instalment in the Creed series and the ninth movie in the overall Rocky franchise, was previously set for a November 23 release. Variety reports that the Creed 3 will now hit theatres on March 3, 2023.

Jordan makes his feature directorial debut with Creed III. He also reprises his role as boxer Adonis “Donnie” Creed from Creed (2015) and Creed II (2018). The screenplay for the threequel was written by Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin from a story the two co-wrote with Ryan Coogler, director of the original Creed.

Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, and Wood Harris, who previously played Bianca Taylor, Mary Anne Creed, and Tony “Little Duke” Evers, respectively, return to their respective roles in Creed 3 alongside Jordan. Florian Munteanu, who played Viktor Drago in Creed II, also reprises his role. Anderson Dame, Donnie’s new competitor, will be portrayed by franchise newcomer Jonathan Majors. Furthermore, Selenis Leyva, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Spence Moore II and Mila Davis-Kent have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone, is notably missing from Creed III. The Creed threequel will be the first Rocky movie in the series not to star Stallone. In addition to the first two Creed movies, the actor portrayed the legendary character in all six of the original Rocky films. Despite not appearing in the movie, Stallone is still associated with Creed 3 as a producer.

The original Creed, which Ryan Coogler directed and co-wrote, was Jordan’s first outing as Donnie Creed, the illegitimate child of Rocky’s friend and boxing rival Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). Rocky himself served as Donnie’s mentor in that movie. In Creed II, directed by Steven Caple Jr., Jordan returned to his previous role, and Donnie took on Munteanu’s Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). In the 1985 film Rocky IV, Ivan Drago murdered Apollo Creed in the ring. Creed III’s plot details have not yet been made public.

Directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan, Creed 4 premieres in theatres on Friday, March 3, 2023.
