God of War Ragnarok - Kratos Was Supposed To Die in Original Script

Its funny that how the moment we were all waiting for came, stayed briefly, and then passed just like the entire year did. When you look a few months back to the time Santa Monica’s team was being literally harassed by fans, it is even funnier. In the snap of our fingers, God of War: Ragnarok touched all our lives and left a huge hole in our hearts “which grows the more you take away” XD. Anyways, now that the short lived Norse saga has been concluded, fans have been left asking what is next for the manliest God who ever walked Greece and Midgard. But today we are going to talk about the alternate version of God of War: Ragnarok which would have turned out to be very different.

God of War: Ragnarok Original Script – Kratos Death and Time Jump!

As you may know, during the pre-production phase of any game, a lot of plans are made and even start taking shape but are later written off in favor of something else. So, today we are going to talk about God of War: Ragnarok’s original plans which had a completely different character fates and journey from what we saw in the game. Ok so first of all, if you haven’t played Ragnarok yet, some major spoilers follow, so proceed with caution. Following information was provided by Matt Sophos (Narrative Director) while talking to MinnMax.

Sophos stated that Kratos died in the Thor fight at the very beginning of the game according to the earliest draft of an outline that they had come up with. He stated that, “And so, he was gonna die, and then it wasn’t a permanent death. What was going to happen – and I don’t care, we can tell this, because it doesn’t happen any more so this is all fan fiction at this point – he would get pulled out of Hell, essentially, by Atreus.” This was later by director Eric Williams as we totally agree with his reasoning as Kratos has already died too many times and returned from hell. Not only would that have been repetitive but also pretty lazy as you can’t just kill him and bring him back in what was supposed to be an epic conclusion to the saga.

God of War: Ragnarok - Atreus Confirmed As Playable Character by Latest Leaks

Sophos also stated that there was going to be a big 20 year time jump-type thing which was again scrapped and we as fans, once again back this move. “As we were developing the story, we knew we wanted it to be about letting go and changing. Knowing that Norse mythology is all about fate and prophecy and everything, and we wanted to say ‘that’s bullshit’, you know?” Well they as well as fans can take a sigh of relief as what they came up with worked incredibly making God of War: Ragnarok one of the best narrative driven games of all time. It turned out to be highly emotional and action packed ride with a lot of meaningful messages and excellent character arcs.

They went a completely different way from the Greek era and it surely worked in their favor. What do you think about this alternate version? Would you have liked it better? Let us know in the comments! God of War: Ragnarok is available to play on Play Station 5 and Play Station 4.
