Without a doubt, The Witcher series is one of the best RPG series of all time. What started as an intriguing journey in Witcher 1, was turned into an experience of a lifetime in Witcher 3! It wasn’t just a regular game with cool graphics, but an incredibly executed narrative that set a very high benchmark in the gaming world.
It was a critically acclaimed game that won numerous awards, including the Game of the Year Award and RPG of the Year Awards at Game Awards 2015. But more importantly, it won the hearts of the gamers and they have been waiting patiently for a sequel. It has been six years now since Witcher 3 was released and you will still find it trending every other day. But the fact is that no matter how great a game is, fans always want more. For such fans, we may have some exciting news.
Witcher 4 Leaks So Far
A few months ago, a job listing was posted by the developers revealing that CD Projekt Red is looking for a camera programmer. Now you may ask what’s special about that? The thing is that according to the job listing, the studio is looking for someone with “real-time third-perspective cameras”. These are exactly the cameras that were used to create the Witcher series, as these games involve real-time choices.
Next, in an interview with Bankier, Adam Kiciński (CD Projekt Red CEO) said, “The first three ‘Witchers’ were by definition a trilogy, so we simply could not name the next game ‘The Witcher 4’. This does not mean, of course, that we will leave the world of The Witcher.” This clearly suggest that the trilogy stands alone and that the game will not be called The Witcher 4. He went on to say that “The Witcher is one of two franchises on which to build the future activities of the company. Today, unfortunately, I can not reveal anything more”. So, a new game will surely come out sooner or later. Its just a matter of when and what.
In 2020, he also said that a “relatively clear concept” has already been staked down for the next entry in the Witcher series. Also, it was said that full production would kick off “immediately” after Cyberpunk 2077 comes out. Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2077 proved to be a really bad experience full of bugs and glitches. This, along with the pandemic, has caused severe delays in all their plans as they are now fully concentrated on fixing their buggy game.
Witcher 4 Release Date and Plot
As mentioned above, right now their focus is renovating Cyberpunk 2077 and making it playable for the fans. That aside, they are also busy creating The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt – The Complete Edition for the next-gen consoles. They are also working on a few standalone Witcher games like The Project Golden Nekker card game. So, its safe to assume that we will not see a new Witcher RPG game for some time.
As of now they just seem to have a concept in their minds and the execution hasn’t even begun. So, considering that even if the production begins as soon as this year, we will not see Witcher 4 before the end of 2024. And honestly, it doesn’t look like the production will begin this year as they already have quite a lot on their plate. Also, with the ongoing war, the fate of the actual world hangs in balance, let alone the Witcher world.
As for the plot, there haven’t been any updates as of now except that it will not be about Geralt. Geralt’s story wrapped up pretty well in Witcher 3 and it would be cruel to drag the old man back into the field. So, it is expected and speculated that The Witcher 4 will feature Ciri as the protagonist and Geralt might have a little bit role to play. It is entirely possible that the game isn’t a continuation of The Witcher Trilogy but a standalone game based in a different timeline, say during Conjuction of Spheres. Also, there’s a widely accepted speculation that the new game would be about Vesemir and his youth as a Witcher. Anyways, its all rumors and theories as of now and it’s best that we wait for some official information.
