In order to appease the audience, the makers of Adipurush had assured that the controversial dialogues in the film would be altered as their intention was never to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments. However, this move caused no significant change as the damage was already done. Adipurush has had a disastrous run on the box office despite an impressive opening weekend. The film is not going to make its astronomical budget of rs. 600-700 crores back through theatres. So to avoid bankruptcy, the makers have to find some way to make their money back. Thankfully, in this day and age you have OTT platforms.
As the makers of the film knew that there would be avid backlash after the release of the film, they’d secured an OTT partner for the picture before the theatrical release itself. Which one? – Netflix. So, after its dry spell in theatres when will the film release on the streaming giant?
Adipurush’s OTT Release Date Has Been Fastracked!
Before Adipurush released in theatres, the makers signed a deal of rs. 250 crores with Netflix for the film to debut on their platform exclusively. There were rumors of Prime Video’s involvement as well but they were just rumors. Since, the deal was already signed the poor reception of the film doesn’t change anything. The makers will still get the hefty amount and the only one at loss here is Netflix and the audience. Back in June, there were reports saying that the Om Raut directorial will start streaming sometime in September but now the release date has definitely been fastracked.
Adipurush’s box office figures currently stand at rs. 145.7 crores at the Hindi box office, rs. 287 crores at Indian box office and the global total is rs. 400 crores. Now you may think that if I add the 400 crores with Netflix’ deal (250 crores), the film breaks even? Nope. It is not even close. The film has not made 650 crores (400+250). Remember, theatrical earnings always have to be divided by two as 50% or sometimes more goes to the exhibitors (theatre owners). Which means Adipurush has only earned somewhere around rs. 200 crores at the box office.
So, its total earning is only rs. 450 crores. Meaning the makers are facing a loss of at least rs. 150-200 crores. However, the poor box office collection is not the only reason why the film will release sooner than expected on Netflix. Recently, the Telugu version of the film got leaked on Twitter in its entirety (HD quality). So, if the audiences watch it on Twitter then who will watch it on Netflix? So, to avoid more loss Netflix is planning to release Adipurush very soon.
The film may release on the platform as soon as in the coming two weeks or in the first week of August. The official release date for Adipurush’s OTT debut is September 16th, but if you believe the latest reports then the date is bound to change. The film stars Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh, Sunny Singh as Laksmana, Vatsal Sheth as Indrajit, Siddhant Karnick as Vibhishana and Devdatte Nage as Bajrang.
