Avatar was a cinematic achievement like no other and so when James Cameron spawned a sequel aka Avatar: The Way of Water for it I was ready to be blown away once again. After 13 years years, finally I got to see the continuation of Pandora’s story and it was an experience like no other and I can’t wait to see more from the franchise. However, it looks like just because the Avatar sequels are planned doesn’t mean they’re releasing soon.
James Cameron Talks About Avatar 3 and The Sequels!
Director James Cameron was in a conversation with The Wrap, when he was asked about the upcoming Avatar sequels as everyone is excited to see what Cameron has in store for us. Cameron talked about his ideal timeline for Avatar 3 and all the sequels’ release dates.
The revered filmmaker said, “They exist. These stories exist. We know exactly what we’re doing. We know what these movies are going to be. We just have to go through the process of getting them done. Ideally, two years from now, [Avatar 3] comes out. Ideally, maybe three years after that, [Avatar 4] comes out. Then maybe a couple years after that, [Avatar 5] comes out. So we won’t be away from the marketplace.”
The director further explained why the Avatar sequels need to be released sooner than later, “So we’ll have that sense of a persistent world, an ongoing story that I think people want. If they’re going to invest in these characters, they’re gonna invest in these worlds, we’re going to give it to them at a regular cadence, ideally. That was the game plan. That’s one of the reasons we were gone so long.”
Cameron’s comments directly contradicts the official Disney timeline that has been out for sometime now. Avatar 3’s release date is the same according to Cameron and the Disney timeline. However, Avatar 4 is supposed to release on 18th December 2026 according to Disney, which is two years after the threequel’s release. So if Cameron says the fourth part will release three years after Avatar 3 then that means that the fourth Avatar will be released in 2027.
As Cameron calls the shots on his films then I think Disney is going to comply if Cameron wants another year. This also means that the fourth Avtar might steal the 2027 December 17th release date from the Untitled Star Wars film. Seeing the lack of plans from Lucasfilm for the film, it would be an easy negotiation. Cameron and Disney contradicting each other might not be a good thing though. For now Avatar 3 seems to be right on track according to both Cameron and Disney. Avatar 3 will release as slated on 20th December 2024.
