After one whole week of business, Barbie stood at $578.7 million global cume. The film boasts the biggest non-franchise opening week of all time. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer had earned $292.6 million worldwide and definitely crossed $300 million by Friday. The second weekend projections put Barbie at $95 million making it the best second-weekend performance ever for a Warner Bros. Pictures release (not adjusted for inflation). That total should brought Barbie’s cume to $350 million by today morning. Oppenheimer also had strong projections earning $46 million in its second weekend. So, were the projections right? Barbenheimer outperformed the numbers in its opening weekend. Did it do the same this weekend? Let’s find out.
Barbie vs Oppenheimer Box Office Battle: Wild Figures!
Variety reports that Oppenheimer is having a historic box office run as the Nolan directorial has earned $400 million worldwide including $174 million domestic – $46.6 million of which was grossed over its second weekend. Oppenheimer has also become the first R-rated film to earn $10 million daily domestically for straight seven days. Now the streak is at ten days. Just in its second weekend, Oppenheimer has out grossed many previous Nolan films, even some of his recent ones.
The full can be seen below:
- The Dark Knight Rises – $1.08 billion
- The Dark Knight – $1 billion
- Inception – $728.5 million
- Interstellar – $647.8 million
- Dunkirk – $512.4 million
- Oppenheimer – $400.4 million
- Tenet – $360.2 million
- Batman Begins – $356.8 million
- Insomnia – $113.6 million
- The Prestige – $104.4 million
- Memento – $39.7 million
- Following – $240,495
In the opening weekend, the Nolan blockbuster collected $82 million domestically and $180 million worldwide, proving the early projections wrong. Oppenheimer broke the IMAX record as it earned $35 million on debut with 740 worldwide screens, making up 20% of total ticket sales – the biggest share ever. Paul Dergarabedian, an expert industry analyst, talked to Variety about how Barbie and Oppenheimer’s competition is benefitting both films:
“Weekend two proves the outpouring of interest in ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ a week ago was not a fluke, Both films put up second-weekend numbers that would have been considered solid as debuts and reflect two of the best sophomore session holds in box office history.”
Speaking of Barbie, the Greta Gerwig summer blockbuster got to $774.5 million till yesterday. Barbie maintained its #1 spot at the box office, followed by Oppenheimer. As I predicted last week, Barbie is on path to become the second film of 2023 to breach the $1 billion mark. There is a real possibility that Barbie becomes the highest grossing film of 2023, beating out The Super Mario Bros. Oppenheimer on the other hand, will cross Dunkirk’s $512.4 million in the coming weeks.
However, the film still needs $112 million to get there. If it does, Oppenheimer will be Nolan’s 5th highest grossing film. Based on current trends, it looks very difficult that the film will cross Interstellar’s $647.8 million. However, you never know. Stranger things have happened. In India, Oppenheimer has grossed rs. 92.05 crores in ten days. The film will cross the rs. 100 crores mark very soon. Also, Nolan’s magnum opus is all set to become the highest grossing Hollywood film of 2023 in India, beating Fast X’s rs. 105 crores and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One’s 106 crores.
Meanwhile Barbie, is struggling to find an audience in India as it has only earned rs. 35.43 crores in 10 days. A huge local Indian release like Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is struggling against Oppenheimer. RRPK only earned rs. 46 crores in its opening weekend. Oppenheimer had opened with rs. 49 crores despite being R-rated. Regardless to say, both films have emerged to be huge successes. This is truly a wonderful time for the cinemas as business is thriving despite a disappointing start to the summer.
It will be interesting to see which film will finally ends the dominance of Barbie and Oppenheimer, as they seem invincible right now.
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $185 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Michael Angarano.
Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
