Heartstopper Season 2 Review - So Full of Love, Life, and Liberty

Let’s be real, none of us knew Heartstopper was going to be that amazing when it came out last year. While most of the viewers checked it out because it shared quite a few similarities with Sex Education, Heartstopper built a tremendous fan base since it was released. So much so that I, personally, was a hell lot more excited for Heartstopper season 2 than Sex Education season 4. Standing true to its title, the show literally makes your heart skip a few beats and this further extends to season 2. This season takes everything you loved about the first one and enhances it with terrific writing, cheerful music, as well as a well paced and personal narrative. Read on to check out our full insights on this season but beware that a few minor spoilers might follow below!

Heartstopper Season 2 Teleports You To Your Happy Place

HOC Rating – ★★★★1/2

Since I am no expert, I will not pretend to understand the issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community but Heartstopper offers tremendous insights into the matter. It showcases each and every character’s personal battles with such intricacy that you just can’t help but ponder. Aside from that, the way it tackles the day to day issues faced by young adults in general is also handled brilliantly. This season dwells deep into the colorful and glimmering world set up by season 1 and doubles down on the mood and the tone of the series. It also expands its horizon to asexuality, mental health, and family bonding.

Unlike first season, there were a few tear jerking moments in Season 2. To name a few, there is a sequence involving a scene with Tao and Charlie where they reminisce the beginning of their friendship. There’s another one towards the very end of the series where Charlie finally opens up about his traumatizing past few years to Nick. That brings us to another very important point – the writing of this season is just phenomenal. There are so many meaningful and well-written dialogues that they are sure to leave an impact on the viewers. And the best part is that these dialogues have been split quite perfectly among all the characters. Each and every character has something to say this season and you better be listening to them, as one of them may change the way you look at your lives.

Heartstopper season 2 doesn’t limit itself to its young characters as this season, teachers and parents play a very important role. Their scope isn’t just limited to the lives of our protagonists as we see a few romantic relationships among the teachers as well as the family dynamics of our protagonists. We get loads of insights into Charlie and Nick’s family for instance; and Olivia Coleman, once again, is a sheer delight to watch as Nick’s supportive and no-bullshit mom. Nick’s dynamics with his father, brother, as well as his classmates are tested throughout the season but the good thing is that Heartstopper chose to move towards light instead of taking a dark approach to this sensitive issue.

Moving on to the performances, everyone among the cast did a terrific job but Kit Connor, Yasmin Finney, William Gao, and Sebastian Croft were the stand out performers of the season. Although, Connor, Finney, and Gao get a lot of moments to shine, Sebastian Croft made the absolute best of what he got. Although, his character Ben largely serves as an antagonist, there’s one particular sequence this season where he confronts Charlie where he completely owns the room with his terrific facial expressions. Special mention to Tobey Donovan as as well owing to his subtle but impactful performance as Isaac, who has the best growth as a character this season.

Finally, let us talk about the technical aspects of the show which Heartstopper completely nails this season! The uplifting music, the crisp editing, the beautiful cinematography, as well as the tone-setting and vibrant color palette ensure that you don’t just watch Heartstopper, but feel every moment as it is meant to be. Although the series is full of ups and downs, it rarely lets smile leave your face. Not just any smile, but that wholesome and serene smile which makes the world light up around you. For that smile alone, this season is worth a watch!

Final Verdict – Heartstopper Season 2 is a top tier piece of cinema which is meant to be felt and not just watched. When you are down, watch Heartstopper and when you are up, definitely watch Heartstopper!
